Yes, but a casing layer almost ALWAYS helps. pure vermiculite casings are a good choice If you have no experience because they have lower risk of contams. In a bulk tub- I often use pure verm casings because they are so easy and it promotes all of the pins to come in nice and pretty on the top. It also helps keep the surface from getting overlaid if you have excess humidity/ water droplets on your colonized sub. If your feeling up to it though, go with Coir/Verm mix all the way at 50/50. Do that right and you can increase your pinset above and beyond. Good luck!

My personal casing blend is 3 cups peat with 1 heaping Tb hydrated lime, blend well, then take 1 cup coir, add 3Tb gypsum, blend well, then combine with peat. Add like 1 1/2 cup water, mix well, pasteurize for 2 hrs at 150*. The coir adds structure to keep the peat from matting down and peat is hella cheaper and doesn't overlay like straight coir. I have never use vermiculite in casings, only cakes. PITA to clean off fruits.

Check the vaults on casings and read hiPs post on casing technique. I'm a liitle dumb so I wrote the whole thing out by hand an hour ago so it would stick. An old habit... Tedious but effective!
