Hello everyone, this is an amazing forum, so much information. Thank you for accepting me. My first grow here consists just of pure long grain brown rice, that i innoculated with "Oakridge" LC. The rice was first cooked in a pan until there was no water left in the pan, then into a tub. The tub was then pressure cooked, in a 12psi cooker, for about two hours on a low heat. Once cool the morning after, innoculated with LC then put away too colonise at a temperature of about 24*C-25*C. Fully colonised after about two weeks, i then birthed the cake. It has now been in the FC for about ten days, at a temperature of about 20*C somtimes slightly lower. I believe i can see hyphal knots now showing, there is of course that beautiful mycelium smell that we all love, and not some mouldy, rotten smell. Well all i can say now is that there is another birthed cake that i will update you all about soon and another two in the pipeline. I hope with all the wisdom on this board that my grow will flourish, and maybe i will be distributing that wisdom some day hehe... P.S in the last picture you can see two cakes, on the left is a cake i birthed today, and on the right is the cake that i birthed ten days ago,as you can see i broke it in two, too see if it was fully colonised right through too the core..next time i will not do this, it was a stupid mistake, but a wonderfull surprise too see such a beautiful sight...S I G H... |

I would definitely double-end case those cakes with moistened coir and/or vermiculite. You want some sort of water reservoir to feed the mycelium better than just rice. It will certainly help your flushes, as mushrooms are about 90% water. Your grow does look incredibly healthy. Welcome aboard! |

Excellent, thank you all for the very usefull replys. I will be out tomorrow too get the verm, and will create two small trays which i will put moistened verm onto, then put cakes on top then more moistened verm on top of them...is this okay? Need for any sterilizing? i wouldn't think so because of the sterility of the verm fresh from the bag, and the fully colonised cakes resistance to contams? If i am wrong please correct me, this is my first grow, just very much want it too be somthing too remember...thanks |

I use it straight out of the bag myself. Others wet it, then microwave it for a minute or two. Some folks sterilize it, but I never found a need to. You don't even need trays for the double-end case. Just make a little pile on the top of your foil, plop your cake down, and spoon another thinner layer on top. Make sure the vermiculite is at field capacity (a few drops should squeeze out of a fistful) and rehydrate it if it seems dry. You should also look at rez-effect techniques, basically mixing the grain with coir or vermiculite. This works really, really well. And I definitely encourage you to try some coir, which you can find at pet stores in the reptile section (used as bedding). Good vibes on big fruits! |

okay...right well i might just go and get some coir and verm then.. ..one last question, once a cake has had 2-3 flushes can i use it as spawn in the above mentioned rez-effect technique...mix up broken up cake with a 50/50 blend of verm and coir in a tub of some sort, let it colonise, then case it, would this work? thanks again for taking the time too answer my questions, it really helps alot.. |

You could use it, but it wouldn't be all that great of a yield--as the mycelium would already be getting a bit old by that point. It is much better to use fresh cakes for something like that, in terms of excellent yields.

Your 'cakes' are great! I, being a bit anal, always microwave my vermiculite. Also, as of late, have been using coir/vermiculite for 'topping the cake' and the bottom also. I microwave those together. You can really expand your mind with the wealth of knowledge found here. This is one of favorite hobbies!

hello everyone, hope you are well i went out today too buy what i thought would be a five litre bag of quality coco for a high price of say £10 from a local hydro shop...i got two five litre bricks for £5.. very happy with that.. i have now DEC'ed the two cakes and also got a lil straw cake that i'd thouht i'd include, before casing it i could see on the surface small primordia, look just like lil tiny shrooms... ...Is it normal for a fully colonised cake too take this long too pin? it has been 11 days now, the temps are nearly constant 20*C (approx 70*F), and the strain is oakridge..maybe just a bit more patience hey... well here's pics...any comments welcome |

Welcome to Topia. Everything looks good so far congrats. Sometimes in fruiting it could take up to 2 weeks to start pinning so no worries. And with using it for spawn after your a few flushes in. I would not do that. It has been done but your running a big risk of contams. From fanning to picking fruits you dont know what floated in fc. Does that make sense?

Hello, been a while...well the oldest cake (the one that's split in half) has now produced nicely, the other cake just has these big growths on it...im thinking that maybe both cakes have verticillium...maybe im just chuffed too see some BOOMERS Also their is the wild grass cake that has produced a small flush of some beautiful mushrooms, and now has had a overnight dunk..and now back in the FC... well here's pics...and i hope that the next flush is ALOT bigger ![]() P.S second from last pic is just a small harvest i took from the wild grass cake and some weird shaped ones from the rice cake, total weight 40 grams fresh.. Also a small question, with fresh dried cubensis what is your average dosage? ...just wondering... Until we meet again... |

It looks as though you did all right with those. Kewl! Wet shrooms are 90% water. If you were gonna do a 2 gram dry dose, you would do a 20 gram wet dose. I look at it like this: 2 grams dry (20 wet)--nice, mellow trip; 3 grams dry (30 wet)--a little more intense; 4 grams dry (40 wet) and above--anywhere from very fun and trippy to crossing the threshold. Of course, doses are subjective. Everyone gets off at a different weight because of individual body chemistry, set, setting, etc. I do think wet shrooms are a little stronger, especially aborts and immature fruits. If you think there is verticulium there, you should dry before ingesting--just to be on the safe side. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | That is a little low for fruiting temps. That is why it took so long to pin and produce. You can up the temp to about 78* F and things will speed up a bit. Glad you are having success though!
