![]() | Is this colonized too long to spawn???
My FOAF is planning to attempt his first ever bulk spawn. He has all the BRF PF jars 100% colonized for 1-2 days now. He had company in from out of state (unexpected) and hasn't gotten around to placing his order from a sponsor for pre-pasteurized poo til just today! Now FOAF is worried that by the time the money order gets there and the order ships (taking 2 weeks in addition to how long it takes for money order to arrive) that these fully colonized PF jars will have been 100% colonized for 3 weeks. And thats only half the jars, the other half willl have been colonized 4-4 1/2 weeks. Jars are in total dark but is this waiting way too long to be used to crumble in gallon bags and used as spawn? Whats should FOAF do? He is worried maybe he messed up....

I often put some of my colonized jars in the fridge, and until now never had a problem using them after a month or two. Just keep them air/water tight. I heard of people storing them for a year or more too, but I didn't try that.

You could put them in the fridge to stall them for now, but make sure they sit for one week after full colonization. They put them in the fridge maybe in a ziplock bag. And away from all other foods like in a drawer. You will be fine

maybe a dumb question, but just to clarify: if FOAF puts these in the fridge to stall, should FOAF wrap them in a black trash bag to avoid light? He really was afraid 5 weeks colonized was too long... Glad to find out otherwise... Thanks for tips!

Fruiting wouldn't be induced at such low temperatures, so i don't think you need to prevent a bit of light from hitting them. I don't know for sure what effect it might have, however, maybe they'd explode as soon as they got some heat (though I doubt that) - and I do wrap foil all around my jars when I put them in, (I only have a transparent bag). It also prevents all but the most obnoxiously nosy guests from studying the cakes.
