![]() | Lazy Cakes - Spawn Bag Tek
I'd like to thank my first mushroom teacher for getting me started on this Tek. My life has improved a thousand-fold better since I began learning how to cultivate the wee cubensis. Key Features No terrarium, no humidifiers, no misting, no problem. Grow with your preferred substrate Reduce exposure to contaminants by growing spawn, pinning, and fruiting in the same spawn bag. Start with spores syringes or LC. Heavily tested in the Midwest and the South of the US Begin Tek Choose your own substrate - moist but not wet. What's cheap in your area? Put 4-6 cups into each bag and seal. This seems to optimal size for me. Let sit for 24-48 hours at room temp or higher. Awakens contaminants that can live through PC otherwise. (Stamets) Roll up bags for PC. Filter patch out. I stack one layer of rolled up bags, then add a second PC raiser, another layer in the same spot as the layer below, another raiser. Configuration in PC will vary based on bag size, amount of bag filled, and size of PC. PC "my way" for 2 hours (see below) Unless you're in a hurry, let it sit until it's cooler to handle. Remove bags with hot mitts of some sort. Jostle bags to let air get in through filter patch. Break apart pieces while still warm. Add a dab of silicone for a self-healing injection site. RTV aquarium. High-temp silicone. Permatex. Let cool for 24 hours. Add tape to cover silicone Innoculate - you know how Add tape over innoculation spot Shake these bags like crazy, up and down, round and round, but roll down past filter patch so that doesn't get a bunch of particles on it. Add to pitch black room with 80-85 F. Stay closer to 80 to avoid temperature spikes during thermogenesis. Hygrometer and thermometers with daily hi/low are helpful. Shake after 4-6 days. Shake again at day 12-15. Then just leave alone. Remove and dispose of contaminated bags. Check every few days for obvious visual signs of contamination and for maintence of temperature. Once a week squeeze air out of bag and smell. If it smells like sour apples you've already got contamination. You'll learn what good mushroom growth smells like, and this varies even among different strains of the same species. After spawn is fully colonized you have a couple options. The complicated method would be to case. However, this isn't necessary. (Currently experimenting with in-bag casing tek). The "lazy cakes" method is to put these bags in an opaque container in the same room. This will prevent light exposure and build up CO2. Leave alone for at least a week before opening. After a week and half, the lazy cakes should be moved into a room with light 12 hours a day. This cake is still in it's original bag. Sweet! Leave it alone until first flush. This is slow, low efficiency, and super clean. I'm attempting a couple of things to increase yield using the same bag tek. Cut open bag when ready to harvest first flush. Pull out cake as gently as possible. Quickly remove ALL pins, and mushrooms. Do the Dunk Tek for 6 hours. I use a tuperware tub. If you got a bunch, use a new bag, spray the inside with Air&Surface Disinfectant and place cake in bag without putting your arm into it. Add a couple teaspoons peroxide and seal up bag. Return to light room and leave alone until you're ready for the second flush. I get 4-5 flushes. A food dehydrator at 90 degrees is not too hot. It will retain potency and dry your shrooms to cracker dry in two to three days dending on thickness and relative humidity. I then package the dried bits in zip lock baggies with dessicant gel packs. This stuff stores really well. PC my way I start with cold filtered water, about 1-2" depth. Heat until steam escapes. Wait 8 min. Crucial step! Close valve or add rocker, depending on model of PC. Watch PC until you reach 15 PSI (or higher). Set timer. PC for 3 hours. Watch PC for jumps or dips in temperature throughout process. Turn off heat. Let sit for 1 hour before removing rocker or opening valve. Do not open until steam is no longer being released. Final Note So love it? Hate it? I'd love to hear what you all have to say.

Good straight forward tek you got there, bro/sista. Many people use a similar approach with great success. I know there are tons of cultivators out there that use similar teks but BuckarooBanzai's tek comes to mind. He got some meaty sob's.

Here us a good link. http://forums.mycotopia.net/popcorn-...llon-jars.html (Buckaroo Bulk Nugget Tek (invitro, spawn bags and/or ½ gallon jars))

Thank you mushmonkey for this right up .I have not tried spawn bags But I want to in a couple weeks .So I was wondering if you could verify a couple things. when you say place 4-6 cups in bag, what size spawn bag r u reffering to? Also say you were using rye could you put in dry then the desired amount of water before putting into pc like you would jars? and one last thing, when you roll up your bags and leave filter patch out. do you mean that you dont roll the filter patch? |

I mix up my substrate/water ahead of time, before adding it to the spawn bag. In fact I use an old bag with the bottom cut out as a sort of funnel, when I fill a new bag. That way the substrate doesn't get all over the filter patch. As for bag rolling, just make sure the whole filter patch is pointing to open air and the outside of the PC vessel. The following method differs from mine, but is instructional: http://www.sporeworks.com/labnotes/ryebagtek.html
