![]() | Tubs vs Bags (Yield)
Is there any reason to suspect that any given amount of substrate would yied more or less in a tub vs a bag? I ask because for a number of reasons bags are far more suited for aparment growing than tubs. Eg bags can have all the empty air spaced removed placed in a bigger bag and transported, empty air space in a tub can never be removed making it much harder to hide or transport Tubs have a flat surface for fruiting versus more of a round one for bags. Tubs also probably get more fresh air exchange, but when the substrate in a bag is colonized as many air holes or filters can be added as wanted. So the bags seem to be more space efficient, easier to hide, move, etc.. any reason to suspect theyd yield less than tubs?

ive done both. and unless you have really large bags. you can't out do yield in a tub from one gallon spawn bag. think about it. the tub might have a 4" sub depth equaling to 2 to 4 spawn bags worth of substrate. for stealth, your right. bags would be very easy to hide. tubs, are a bit tougher. you can hide them easily in closets or get large storage lockers to stack them in. plus you have far more surface area in a tub for fruiting. thats not to say you can't get good yield off a substrate bag. you can. but you have more space to add more substrate in a tub. where in a spawn bag. you might not be able to fit a large spawn bag equivalent to the same volume of substrate in a pressure cooker. this also leads me to sterilization talk. doing bags is effective. ive done it for years, i like it. but at the same time, im pressure cooking far more than doing bulk subs in tubs using pasteurization. in tubs, i can pasteurize large amounts of substrate in 2.5 hours. the same amount of substrate that i pasteurize would take me 4 pressure cookers full of substrate bags to sterilize. so in the end. out of ease and less work. i say tubs win. you could do something like this though. so its kinda a combo. bag tek/tub or tray tek. works the same way. might be hard to stack that one. but if you have shelves it might work well. http://forums.mycotopia.net/photo-ga...sand-tray.html (Sand Tray)

One of my current experiments involves the deep-dish aluminum pan inside a bag, with a polyfil plug and polyfil filled holes in bag when it's time for FAE. I line the bag with one or two layers of black trash bag and cover with another piece of the plastic, cut to slightly larger than needed. Surface can then be exposed without exposure to unfiltered air by shifting loose piece under the pan, using the bag to move it. Results have exceeded expectations!!!

Well, if you use big bags (like 2.5 gallon and up), you can get nice yields. Tubs are bigger, though. Both work quite well for fruiting, and both can be made very low maintenance, so I guess it's a matter of space and preference. I am talking about sandbags for fruiting, not spawn bags, by the way.

Tubs you can use over and over and over again , plastic bags ... not so much. I've heard of mushroom growing operations in Asia that use bags to colonize and they have a literal mountain of plastic out back.

Sandbags are great! And when they're done you can chuck the leftover sub in with the kitty litter, then wipe out the bags with paper towels and put them in the plastic bag recycling. Not everyone is as OCD as me though.
