I remember reading somewhere that when pressure cooking presealed bags you need to leave air in the bag and let the filter breath, otherwise they burst in the cooker. Do you seal your bags before sterilizing them? And if you do how do you lay them out in your pressure cooker to keep them from bursting? |

I only use the Sporeworks pre-sealable bags. I heat seal them with an Impulse sealer set to about 4.5 before PCing. I do not leave any air in the bags. Always remember to put a plate (or something else) over the top of spawn bags in the PC. If the bags expand, they can block the vent/safety ports and cause a hazardous overpressure (read - big explosion).

When you're finished prepping your bags and loading them into the PC do you wrap the excess plastic back around the spawn like an @ symbol or do you just leave it hanging out loose? And if you do wrap it back around do you wrap it filter patch side in or filter patch side out? Sorry for the excess of questions, just want to get the procedure down in my head before I start digging into my bags and end up screwing half of them up due to trial and error. |

I always wrap spawn bags with the filter side in. If I have enough bags in the PC to just stack 'em so they hold the flaps down via weight, I do that. If I am only doing one or two bags on top of a load of jars, I use a big rubber band to keep 'em wrapped up. DON'T forget the plate on top. NEVER hesitate to ask questions.

So the procedure in steps is as follows: 1. Fill bags with substrate 2. Roll excess plastic around the substrate, filter patch pointed inwards 3. Seal the bags with an impulse sealer or similar 4. Place trivet in the bottom on pressure cooker and line the sides with crumpled foil to insure bags don't come into contact with the sides and melt 5. Pour an appropriate amount of water into the pressure cooker 6. Use an elastic band or masking tape to hold the rolled plastic of the spawn bag to itself 7. Fill the pressure cooker with as many spawn bags as you have or that it will fit 8. Place a plate or similar object on top of the bags in the pressure cooker to prevent blockage of the steam vent 9. Put lid on pressure cooker, slowly bring pressure cooker to temperature with the rocker off 10. Put rocker on to pressure cooker when at the correct temperature 11. Allow pressure to reach 15 PSI and maintain pressure for 2-3 hours 12. Let pressure cooker cool down, remove bags and move to the next stage Does that sound about right? |

Sounds perfect. I wouldn't worry about the aluminum foil to prevent the bags from touching the walls and I never PC anything for longer than 90 minutes, but other than those two things, yer dead on from my perspective.
