baby food jars as well as being abundant and durable, can be found for free if one knows where to look. Lots of plant tissue culture labs use baby food jars for their work. I dont know what u mean by filtration.

IME, baby food jars won't hold up to the temps required for sterilization. It may just be thr brand I got (don't remember which one I bought) but after the first steaming, they were FUCKED.

Interesting thought, I might be going to the store tonight to check them out. I had never thought of using baby food jars. I was once able to find canning jars that were very short in size and still used the standard size lid. These were awesome for agar as you had a nice sized opening to work in.

baby food jars is how i first dipped my toe into agar culture. there the perfect size no need to keep buying petri dishes and there pc able too or at least the onse i used were. another good idea is to use glass herb shakers. the pic below is of the ones i use that i get from asda, but i should think your wallmart would have something similar i found a type that had a lid that i was able to put through the microwave without it warping and then tried it in the pressure cooker and it worked. there great for long term storage as they take up very litle space compaired with half pints or baby food jars. you will need to poke a hole and pull some polly fill through it, as the pressure will force them open during the pc run. But other than that there solid to poke the hole i use a screw driver and my alcohol lamp heat the screw driver then shove it through. since learning to grow mushrooms i cant go any where without picking stuff up and assessing its usefulness for mushroom growing. it can get quite irritating to people who go shopping with me.

I started using baby food jars as well as many other small jars, worked out doubt storing them and cleaning was a bear. I found it much better to try it or just make sure that you want to do agar and buy sleeves of disposable dishes. You can find them for $7.50 for 25. They come sterilized and ready to use.

Ok I use baby food jars in my tissue culture lab all the time. They do withhold pressure and I have used the same jars for over six years. They do just fine. The following link has a nice cap that is vented from ribs that i use all the time. They work just fine. I have several strains of shroos on agar. No contamination. No need for poly these lids work great. http://www.phytotechlab.com/Detail.aspx?ID=166
