![]() | Can I PC a day ahead and other questions
Here's the deal- I am 99.99999...99 percent sure I am receiving spores in the mail tomorrow. I want to do a spore comparison test between honey, Corn Syrup, Cane syrup (they had it at the store and it seemed viable) and the various possible mixes. I am all prepared for this and have even made silicon tops using copper pipe joints (fun fact. Did you know that copper is antibacterial? Even if it gets wet I should be good this way) and wide mouthed quart jars. The questions I have are: Can I PC my jars a day ahead or should I PC them right when the spores get here and innoculate them right away? Would it be better for me to mix the different types of spores (I have GTs and Cambodians in the mail) or do my tests with just one cc of spores a jar and call it a day? I am going to be using a pint jar with a soldering iron in it as a heating source. Should I leave the tin foil on the jars so as to prevent evaporation or are my silicon lids enough? Thanks in advance.

I would like to see some pics of those lids. Yes you can make you jars up tonight. They have to cool down anyway. Don't mix your spores. Not real sure what you are talking about with the soldering iron. Pics and further explanation would help.

You can sterilize your LC tomorrow (unless you won't have time tomorrow). It only takes an hour or less for them to cool, just don't inject them right away after cooking them. Grains take a lot longer to cool. It isn't good to mix strains, they will compete for nutrients. Use 1/4cc if you want the syringe to last longer. A pint jar with a soldering iron for heat does not sound safe. Get an aquarium heater in a 2 liter. Are these lids for your LC? Explain how these lids are made please |

Patience my friend. This is definitely a hobby of patience. Good Luck, I'm interested to see which is the best.

Hasn't this horse been beat to death already???? I guess not . Mixing various cube strains will not make them compete against each other. They are the same species with just minor differences as far as dominance of certain genes. I dont have time to get into all the specifics but all the info has been posted here time and time again. Are you trying to use the soldering iron in the jar as a heat source? If so, I would advise against it. Lots of safer ways to maintain proper temp can be found. Personally I use a heat bomb. Some others have a preference for dub-tubs. Regardless of the method you chose, just make sure it is safe. Soldering irons get hot and can cause a fires. The biggest bit of advise I can give to you is to read, read, and read some more. Develop a working understanding of the mushrooms life-cycle. I have also found it helpful to have an understanding of the contaminants I am trying to avoid. In this hobby knowledge is the single most important factor, attain it and use it to your advantage. But to answer your question about PC'ing ahead of time.... Sure, why not? In fact when I started my first project I allowed my jars to incubate for a week before I inoculated them to make sure I sterilized them properly. ggod |

Well, when I made my LCs I used hot water (boiling in fact) and I let the tubes sit for four days on accident. Not an iota of growth! Then, before I used them, I PCed the jars and let them sit until just barely warm to the touch. Then I put them into a barrel (of nonflammable material) with a dark cover and a heat bomb. It's only been a few hours (let's say 16) but I'm already seeing wisps in some of them! |
