![]() | 1st Spawning Under Way!
FOAF just spawned for the 1st time ever!!! He spawned 24 1/2 pint PF jars (crumbled into 4 one gallon bags). He oven pasteurized it all last night. Spawned to 1 one 10lb bag of castings (looked like a gallon bag size) and one gallon hydrated coir and a half gallon verm. He lysoled everything good and wore gloves and procedural mask. He frequently used hand sanitizer. He added some distilled water to get it to field capacity. He just eyeballed it and prays to god it came out okay. The whole mixture was mixed in a 64 gallon rubbermaid and then eyeballed out into 4 big gladware containers. They were all filled almost to the top leaving a nice 4"+ big thick substrate. He then sprinkled on maybe 1/4 to 1/2" on pasteurized substrate with NO crumbled PF jars contained in this sprinkling, to avoid grain/air contact. The whole mixing process was exposed to the air for 5 minutes TOPS. FOAF REALLY hopes that wasnt too long. he worked as fast as he could. All 4 containers were press and sealed then 6 to 9 knife slits was put into each. These trays were placed in a FC with 4 1" polyfilled holes. There is no perlite yet bc he ran out. Going to store now to get, but he figured its ok without it since they are press and sealed anyway. All surfaces of the inside of the FC and the family size gladware containers were wiped with a paper towel soaked with 91 percent alcohol. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE come out! This is the first time so anxiety/excitement is very high! High spawn ratio was used to help colonize fast! And now we play the waiting game.....LOL. Thanks for help to this point! Peace! ![]() 6 quarts spawn total (maybe 5 if you count the dry verm dumped off tops of the cakes) 4 quarts coir 4 quarts castings (approximately. It looked to be same amount as the coir) 2 quarts verm |

the substrate that was sprinkled on top (with no crumbled pf jars contained) actually ranged in thickness. It was an average of 1/4" thick but at its thinnest it may have been 1/8" and maybe 1/2" at its thickest. Total sub depth is a solid 4 plus inches! Is it too thick though at its 1/2" spots? Hope it doesnt contam...

Nah, it sounds like you did your homework and took advantage of the wonderful advice offered here. Your top substrate layer should be fine. Just keep it in the dark with very low air exchange for a week or so, and you will be in good shape. Good vibes on the grow! |

Sounds perfect to me. Just keep it in a dark warm place (Doesn't have to be 80F, 70 will also work fine) until it is fully colonized. I personally would have used the lid for the tub and not put press n seal on it with holes in it but that's just me. I always use holes drilled in the side with poly fill stuffed in them. I helps keep the sub from drying out too much while colonizing. Good luck to you man! Thats going to be a badass tub if all goes right.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Yeah, no need for perlite while incubating. The micro-climate inside the container is what you want. When you are ready to fruit in a week or so, that's when you introduce it to the fruiting chamber environment. A bulk sub is also a few degrees warmer than its outside environment, so any temp above 70 F is fine.

The room temp is 77 degrees. The only reason my FOAF used press and seal instead of the lids was because he didnt want to drill holes in the lids. He wanted to save the lids whole so when he dunks these monster cakes in the fridge they would be enclosed and not likely to have a contam enter. Fingers are crossed and praying for good vibes....peace!

Keep 'em dark, keep 'em warm and check on them every day. Look out for cobweb - that is your biggest danger while incubating a bulk substrate.
