can you put the tub in a room with ambient sunlight? that's all they really need. your set up now will do, though! (although they certainly don't need 8 hrs of light per day, only a few mins is required)

Yeah I just keep it in a room with a window to let ambient light in. Are you using a clear tote? If so you don't really need a light if there is a window. For the colored ones it might be wise to make a "window" in the lid like I have seen done with a piece of glass and some silicone adhesive and put the light over the tote/window hole.

They don't need much light at all to initiate pins, but if they get enough light for me to read by (and especially if it's natural indirect light from a window) then in my experience I get a denser and more even pin set. I set a cool-white compact fluoro bulb for 12 hrs on, 12 off even if they get some natural light too, and when I started doing that I got noticeably better results. Mushrooms prefer the blue end of the spectrum, so avoid the "warm white" bulbs. The worse the bulb makes your skin look in the mirror, the better it is for mushroom growing (like the fluorescent lights in gas station bathrooms). Also, keep the bulb a good distance away from the bin since even a 13 watt compact fluoro gives off some radiant heat, and it can be enough to overheat a tub if it's in an enclosed space, like a closet. If the light is mounted on the ceiling, having the bin(s) on a shelf a couple of feet (about half a meter or so) under it is plenty.

I have the light taped to the clear tote when the lights on the temps25 and when the lights are off it's about 23 to 24 and humidity stays around 95%. I was just wondering how long it takes to start seeing pins? It's been like3 days but that's all I got for now thanks for the responses
