Anyone ever try growing on a loaf of wheat bread?

This is sort of an experiment I started last night with some spores that I had. I had some spores left over from an Amazonia grow that I've done and I had some leftover wheat bread, so I thought what the heck and I innoculated the bag of bread.

Anyone ever tried this before?

I honestly think contams will take over. But like you said....what the heck.?!. I would just be sure to do this in an area that wont contaminate any other projects you might have going.
Best of luck,

unless the factory that baked the bread was super-sterile, there have been spores floating in there since day one... and i assume you opened the bag to eat some bread first

if you've got spores to waste, try lentils. I have no idea if it would work, but I don't see why it wouldn't, they hold alot of water. you'd obviously have to spawn to bulk, but I am curious to see how it would pan out

Even if the bread was sterile (which i assure you it's not) there isn't enough water in there to support a full mycelial network much less a flush of mushrooms. And if you tried to add enough water, the bread would turn to goop, which is not conducive for healthy, fluffy myc to colonize it. Goop would likely have bacterial problems too.

Sorry!

I've tried mung beans, which when hydrated have a similar consistency to lentils. They get super dense and clay like, which is very difficult for the mycelium to work its way through. I ended up tossing the mycobag after it stalled out about halfway through and then just sat there. Saved what spawn i could from it, but it was mostly a waste of time and space.

Check out Hyphaenation's alternative substrate thread:

Lots of good stuff!
