Quart WBS question

Hey all
I have three jars of wbs almost fully spawned. One of the jars is almost a solid mass and I don't think that there will be any shaking to get it loose to pour out. In a case like that do I just dig it out with a sterilized utensil and break it up by hand?

Yep. You can wear clean gloves and use your hands and/or you can shovel the contents into a clean plastic bag, and break it up inside of that. I almost always do the plastic bag thing because I normally use PF tek as spawn. If you're not going to spawn into a giant amount of bulk substrate you can even mix up everything inside the plastic bag, then dump into whatever container you use.

For clarification, your hands are outside the plastic bag.

When its 100% try whacking it against your palm or something soft...dish towel folded up several times till its thick....bike tire....duct tape roll. It will probably break apart. If not then yeah you can use a clean fork or something.

my foaf breaks up jars of spawn against a tire. if my foaf can't break up with a tire and has to break up rye or wbs with a utensil that means the spawn is pretty mature or the moisture content was a lil high or not enough gypsum was used. yes- use a sterilized utensil to remove spawn and then break up by hand preferably with gloves

Thank you, Om, I hadn't considered plastic bags but that's what I'll do. I test whacked it last night, no luck. Also, I guess that I had better be thinking about what caused it to grow so solid. I hadn't thought that far yet.
Being a rookie has it's good points, everything is new and fresh to learn.

The way to keep from having it all grown solid like that
is to just shake it up good when it is 30% and 70% colonized.
The myc will recover and start growing again within days of the shake.

Also bro shaking your jars and allowing them to recover will let you see if its truly clean. If not mold or bacteria will show their faces when you shake.

haha, damn. everything i was gonna say was already said so far... shake at 30% colonized, whack against something soft, scoop out with sterilized utensil, break up inside plastic bag.

Whenever I spawn I get a vision of the guy from the video on youtube, speaking about shaking and loosening his grain in the jars: "I like to use a bicycle wheel..."

Just one of those things that seems to have got stuck in my mind for good.
