i can only see any difference when comparing wiggle worm or another national brand with locally harvested worm castings. Ruling in favor of the wiggle worm i found the wiggle worm to be darker(less compost, more poop) and more nutrient rich than the local stuff but thats just what i have come up with in my area

The biggest difference I've found is whether its pure worm castings or if it has a bunch of filler material added in, like coir or something along those lines. There's a steep price difference between pure castings and the cheap stuff. At my local garden store, the amount of money I'd have to spend on 2 cubic feet of pure worm castings, is more money than I'd have to spend on the stuff needed to build a great and easy to use vermicomposter (3 roughneck rubber maid tubs, bit of scrap wood, screen, 1/2 oz of redworms). Once built, the weekly addition of vegetable waste from my kitchen, cardboard toilet paper rolls, egg cartons turns into a bi monthly harvest of more pure worm castings than I have use for. All my potted plants are in worm castings, I water with the leachate that collects in the bottom bin, and I use the castings to grow various fungi. Its great stuff, and best of all, its free! Better than free, it comes from my garbage!!! Doesn't that sound better than giving up your hard earned dollars for worm poo? http://forums.mycotopia.net/attachme...oscrjunior.pdf http://forums.mycotopia.net/compost-...heap-easy.html (Worm Castings at Home: High Quality Mushroom Substrate Cheap and Easy!!)

There's a company growing and selling bait worms about 100 miles from my house, and they've been doing it for years. They have a gigantic pile of castings outside (but under a roof), and though they're low-quality compared to the sifted and bagged stuff like Wiggle Worm, they're still castings and proper pasteurization takes care of the leftover food bits and the rest. Oh, and the best part is that the farmer will deliver a truckload of 'em for $200 right to my yard. And I don't mean a pickup truck, either. It's not a full-size tri-axle dumptruck load, but it's still a dump truck (probably about 5 cubic yards worth). One load is enough worm poop for years of mushroom growing plus top-dressing my entire property (about an acre). So if you don't want to grow your own worms, try to find someone growing bait worms close by and see if they have a small mountain of castings outside...

I found some called "soil mender" that are 100%. They were $13 for 5 lbs. I guess that could be considered expensive, but I don't have the option of making a composter. Anyway the stuff worked great when mixed with coir & verm.
