Steaming and PF Cake help

Today a foaf had the oppurtunity to steam a dozen jars in anticipation for the arrival of syringes.

He has some questions and some obvious observations.

"Duh" Observation 1: Don't use tap water while steaming, or anytime water needs to be evaporated. the tap water here is very hard, and has a high chlorine content. my foaf will purchase some distalled water and use it next time. There are harness marks from where the water that was used in the pot.

See picture below of the spacing jars so I could put enough water to leave alone for a couple of hours when I had to go out and couldn't watch the stove.

Is there anything that can be used get the jars nice and crystal clean again?

Question 1: I do have a gallon of spring water that I bought, I just forgot to use it. I used the tap water in my substrate... Will the jars be ok? Do I need to remake the substrate and re-steam with spring water?

My foaf decided to use fresh ground brown rice instad of store bought flour, but the grinder used did not completely "grind". It chopped very finely, you could still see peices of rice in the "flour".

Will this affect the substrate? I'm looking at one of my jars right now, and because of the tempature raise and steaming of the jars, it actually cooked the rice. No water got inside the jars from the steaming itself, just the water from the substrate itself.

The jars themselves are cooling in the box they came in, covered with foil to attempt to keep out airbornes, in my closet.

There's still 2 more dozen jars to make, and I wanted to know what errors I made this time around so I can get the best results possible with my noobishness!

[I was really surprised as to how hot the jars were, but satisfied to know that the steaming did the job it was supposed too. as soon as they cooled enough to be moved, they had to be handled with a towel as they burned fingers. Had to move them do to space concerns & roommates]

Now off to work!

steam with tap,
use the bottled in your substrate.
those mineral deposits are no big deal,
soapy water.

chunky rice is fine.

should leave jars in covered pot until cool.

did you see http://forums.mycotopia.net/showthread.php?t=8568 (my first grow :) [success steaming pf jars])

what is the purpose of leaving the jars in the pot until they cool?

stovetop reality comes at a price, so the pot couldn't stay there overnight.

Yes, I've read through that thread before, but I'm not exactly sure of the relevance.

you can move the pot,
just don't remove the lid
until it cools.
why ?
because it's now extemely clean inside,
until you remove the lid.
since the jars are hot,
the air pressure inside is different
than outside,
as they cool
they suck in air.
now,
it just makes sense to allow that to occur
in a clean place.
that way risk of contams is lowered.

as for link relevance-
it's meant to help 'inform' you,
up to you
how you
capitalize on that.

putting a little bit of white vinegar in your steaming water will get rid of the cloudy powder residue that's left behind from the evaporation of the water.

If you use an All American to PC, distilled water is strongly suggested in the operations manual.
