I bet they are going to suck. I have a smart phone that I turned off and went back to my old piece of shit cuz it presses buttons when your face touched the screen. Usually ended the call or dialed numbers. Plus it would download updates during the night so you had to have the data access package for an additional $50/month or else you would be charged by the byte and wake up to a $500 bill. That iphone will just be like that with an ipod, it looks cool but the majority of smart phones are more troble then they are worth. I crashed my honda trying to answer mine cuz it was new and I was trying to touch the screen with the stylus to answer the call...rear-ended a truck.

I think the simplicity of the iphone will be nice once they work out all the initial glitches. I spent allot of money on a 30GB ipod not to along ago and it was cool as long as you didn't let the battery run down all the way. Then you are fucked. Sent in to service once and it did the same thing, now the piece of shit just sits in my desk......won't work and out of warranty. I currently have a Treo 700 that works great.........though I've never broken out the stylus while driving there PsilocibeJuggalo....LOL!

Hell no. Look at this: ![]() Admittedly, many "smart" phones would have similar charts, but think about the iPod: maybe waiting for the second or third generation is the way to go. Then again, what the hell do I know? I've never owned a cellphone in my life. I'd just have people calling me on it, which is annoying, and I would become yet another driver who no longer uses his turn signals because I'd be holding the damn phone. Maintaining the continuity of a conversation is obviously more important than staying aware of where my 2000 pounds of steel is headed at 70 mph... I know two people who've been killed while talking on phones as they drove; one went through a red light while arguing with his wife and got obliterated by a cement truck (quite a way to end the relationship). The other just pulled out into traffic and got T-boned right in the driver's door. Hang up and drive, no matter which phone ya got! I want all of you to be alive, growing more mushrooms... |

If you're going to use a cell phone while driving, you need to get a hands free device. Holding the phone is actually illegal in many states.

Update: Found links. Check this: http://www.ipods99.com/ or google it for awhile. They are out there, and you can do them yourself. The 30G iPod Video battery kit costs $20, includes the tool and a one-year warranty. EDIT: The hands free phones are still not for driving; it's the split attention that is the problem moreso than something in your hand (why cheeseburgers in our hands don't cause as many accidents as cellphones or blowjobs). | |

Thanks for that Link TV....I'm looking into it now. I don't know if a new battery will fix it, but it's worth a shot. The problem with mine was if you didn't recharge it before it powered down on its own, it wouldn't power back up ever again even if you tried to charge it first. It would do this with fairly new batteries.

Thanks Lazio, I've tried that though. I've jumped through hoops with that piece of shit. I haven't given up....probably have to just send it back if I ever want to use it again. Now that i've got most of my songs on my Treo, I really don't even miss it. I'm just pissed about spending all that money on a freakin paper weight.

I think the state of electronics has pushed the ability to put so much niffiness into such a small package that the human interface suffers in a bad way. The mechanicals of the product break way to easy, we are apes after all. Buttons are way too small. Displays are to hard to read, especially with my old eyes. |

In spite of being a enjuneer, I'm really a bit of a Luddite. After a few years I gave up having a cell phone, seldom watch the tube, hope I never have a job that requires a blackberry, don't have an uncontrollable urge for a 6 terabyte iPod etc. I guess I'm around all that shit all day, so it's really kind of nice to escape it. Like, why the fuck would I want to be at camp, watching sunset over the bay, and have the fucking cell phone fart?

i. want. one. so. badly. i keep thinking, the only reason to have an iphone right now.. is to call some one.. and tell them you are calling them from your iphone "ALL I DID WAS TOUCH YOUR NUMBER, AND IT CALLED YOU, MOM!!!" *the only responce is shocked silence, as the technological breakthrough sets in* but thats alota shells to toss out for something that i will more than likely lose, break, or have stolen. (same reason im reluctant to get any expensive phone) id rather just have an ipod with wifi and then get a converter so i can watch movies Convert iPhone - The Professional's Software i asked my FOAF if he wanted to go halvsies on one with me ..NO DICE! |

So apparently the case is metal and the screen is real glass. Metal doesn't absorb shock too well, so I guess dropping it would transfer all the shock to the glass, which would probably break it. They sure did make it real slick and shiny, too. Whooops! And, some reviewers predict complaints from the fact that it won't be able to do what's implied by the movie watching features; streaming video to your phone bumps up against the bandwidth bottleneck of the cell network, which isn't up to the iPhone's capabilities yet (though it might help speed that development up). And if you live in Vermont, sorry, no iPhones at all! (Seriously, they got left out since AT&T isn't a provider in that state) As far as status-bling goes, the iPhone still isn't as cool as the brand-new 12th generation iPod I got from an insider (Most companies design and build multiple generations of a product before releasing the first, to keep the "NEW!!" factor going by releasing the next gen as popularity wanes for the previous). Anyhow, Apple's going all the way with miniaturization, and none of you can repost this anywhere, but here is a scanning electron micrograph of the new and Top Secret iPod "Femto," seen here resting on a pile of awkwardly bulky nanotubes. It uses no headphones, you just stick it in your ear. ![]() The trouble with miniaturization and packing tons of features in tiny boxes being trendy is that the trendiest stuff is invisible to the naked eye, so how do I let others know how cool I am? |

I want one too. Just can't rationalize it / afford it. It kind of ticks me off that they want people (most anyway) to switch to AT&T AND buy and unsubsidized phone. Plus, if you get out of contract early, you are stuck with fees. Companies have used subsidized phones as excuses for contract fees ("we gave you a phone, you have to keep up your contract or pay us back"). But with the iPhone, you get the same fees. I'll probably wait until the 2nd version. When I'll be drooling for a new iPod anyway and that will help with the rationalization.

THat's what I've heard too. But I've been reading how they have been improving it. Its still not top'o the line, tho. I think some areas are seeing real download times of around 200 kpbs. Which doesn't suck. I don't fully understand this, but it's not 3G, it's EDGE (not as good?). Supposedly the second version and the euro version will be 3G. They have contracted with Vodafone in Europe, and they have a 3G network.

EDGE is Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution. It's the successor to GPRS wap browsing, which didn't achieve any great throughput. The WAP speeds over GPRS were using 2G architecture while EDGE relies on 3G. Up here in Canada my phone has unlimited EDGE/WAP traffic for $5/month. I stream a radio station in the morning/evening for about half an hour, and have my phone setup to do remote desktop to my home computer.. I'm not paying out my ass either. I don't think I'd want an iPhone, mainly because I prefer CDMA over GSM.. none of that interference around monitors/speakers

i think mr. job's has been hoping that wifi connectivity will become alot more popular in the very near future. from what i understand it has the capability to connect to a wifi hotspot and pull internet from there and probably in the future will be voip compatable. meaning that when u get into a wifi area you'll be placing calls over voip instead of over cell. and when out of wifi range it'll switch to cell. I4one will not be purchasing a Iphone any time soon i prefer the full functionality of my laptop

Zim, the wifi capability isn't enabled until you sign on for a dataplan.. which IMHO is bollocks. To even make calls using VOIP would mean you would have to either be able to configure VOIP settings (from Primus, Vonage, whoever else offers VOIP), or buy a 'convenience package' from AT&T. It'll do whatever you want it to I imagine, just gotta keep tacking money onto the price tag

There are ways around everything. THis will be a very functional mini-computer, after all. I also *think* that the dataplan is mandatory with the iphone.... The wi-fi thing is awesome, but I want to see wi-max. It wouldn't surprise me at all to learn that in the very near future AT&T will be again updating their towers- only to now include wimax. Maybe the iPhone will just skip 3g and move right to 4g. It makes sense, tho, if you think about it. In one blow AT&T could offer the best most up to date service for cell phones. At the same time, they could start bundling a house line and television package along with it ala FIOS. Finally someone could give Verizon a taste of real competition. They have needed that for a while, imo.

i guess you aren't really tech nerds, are you ? That iphone is simply amazing. For me the full functional web browser is the biggest plus. I have a data plan with my old cell phone and use a bluetooth connection to connect to my laptop, but i'm tired to fire up my laptop just to look up simple things when i'm on the road. aweeesome ! |

Just a nasty note on my opinion of AT&T. I was really happy with the AT&T plan for years, but when they sold out to Cingular and I swithched plans, they fucked me really hard and I din't enjoy it a bit. Misleading contract, fucked billing etc. So i dumped the family plan with 5 phones. Cost a bundle but I don't regret it. Even then I overpaid, and they wouldn't send my money. Like Adelphia, said they'd keep it for when I came back. As if. Now that Cingular has lost business and reputation, they've had to go back to the AT&T brand name. Hopefully they'll also revert to honesty.

Nice. So, once every other year or so Apple gets to play with your phone for a little while. Don't forget to delete any relevant personal info and all your contacts before sending it in. Actually, within a year there will be several companies offering the service cheaper, I bet, or even a kit available to do it yourself, like exists for iPods. Soldering isn't THAT hard... My only complaint about the thing is that you need an AT&T two-year contract even if you only use the Wi-Fi. I think Apple really shat the bed when they got in it with AT&T. |

I agree. I have Nextel and everywhere I go with a friend of mine that has AT&T, it seems his phone doesn't work anywhere. Especially indoors. AT&T blows IMO. That alone doesn't make me even consider buying an iphone. And I love Mac products and would love to have the iphone.

No soldering isn't THAT hard I know..used it plenty. But its the point. Taking out the fuse panel in a Toyota and taking the screw of the back of the fuse so you can change it....wasnt hard either... But it was fucked up. I guess its the "why" for me, give me a good reason "why" although with all the hype, Im sure they have already thought of an excuse.

They better come up with a really good excuse, because the backlash against the battery thing seems to be growing. And, the guy who broke DVD encryption claims to have a hack that activates the Wi-Fi without AT&T activation. That didn't take long! Then there's the iPhone Killer, a Linux-based unlocked smartphone with GPS/Wi-Fi/etc. that can run open-source software. |
