Cacti & Verm 2 completely seperate questions

Ok first there's a pic of a cactus that was at my local nursery. $50. Anyway, there was no name on it identifying it. Does anyone knoe what type it is? It was with my camera phone but I think the quality is ok. Next are some pictures of some Vermiculite that I just bought. They had a fine type that was in a small bag, but I wanted a big bag. At the bottom of the bag there is fine verm even a little powder it looks like, and at the top there is some really big pieces. Throughout the bag it seems that there is no real consistent size. The question I have is... Is this verm ok for cakes? I know that Hippie replace an order due to the verm barrier being to big of verm. Thanks for your responses.

The cactus looks like it may be some type of hylocereus or cathedral cactus.. It would be good for grafting stock.. Thats about it..

As for the verm... Looks good to me..

So the Verm doesn't have to be a consisten size? The small bag that they had was only 4qt., but only $2.49 , but it was all one size... fine. like bb's or kinda like perlite. So the cactus doesn't look like anything for cooking down then...? Oh, and the guy told me he can get me 4 Cu Ft. of verm any grade I want for $19.99. That is a HUGE bag. I will be going back to him for sure. What is the best grade? size, texture for cakes, verm barrier, casing? Can one type be used for all purposes with good results? Sorry for asking such dumb questions, but I really don't know.

You want fine grade vermiculite for the barrier on jars. The smaller the verm the harder it is for anything to penetrate the verm barrier.

I have used fine, med, and coarse grade verm in the substrate mix for jars. The coarse tends to colonize faster, but they all work just fine.

Your cactus isnt active, but your verm is fine.
