just how busy is 'topia city ?

i've been watching the stats for a few weeks now
and i can say that
on a typical day here
roughly 200 registered members drop by
hard to get a count on
unregistered guests [folks not logged in]
but the 'online now' stats would
indicate that they typically number
about 60-70% of the regulars
to yield an approximate grand total
of about 320-350 people
per 24 hour interval

Not too shabby, I know that I am here probably 12 times a day, not as much as others but still a lot. This is one hell of a place you have made Hip!
Do you think we are growing at a rate proportionate to the number of guests that come by?

well,
we WERE until about a week ago
then suddenly i noticed a sharp drop off
in new registrations.
i think that is partially due to
most of those lost in the server switch
have finished re-registering here.
also the return of spring weather may
partially explain the drop.

Its spring? I spend to much time in here to notice, damn these rickets! lol

give us a little history hip. the site opened four years ago? so give us a quick walkthrough as far as membership goes. like first year had a slow pickup. etc etc. third year we gained about 200 new members a month with 2000 hits a month etc etc (just tossing numbers out, i know im way off)

hmm,
let's see.
the first year was a bit hard,
we grew a bit too fast
before we were ready.
i'd say by the end of year 1
we had roughly 500 members registered,
and about 40 threads active every day.
a year later we were twice that size.
however
internal politics triggered a split
of 'topia into two sites,
one stayed here with me
the others founded nan's nook.
right after the split
we were basically
right back to about the same
as the end of year one,
i.e. about 40 threads a day.
in year three we grew steady
and regained our former size
and traffic volume as well.
year four began well enough
but growth again was too fast,
our expenses began to sky-rocket
as bandwidth use nearly tripled
and the discus board grew so large
we began crashing our server again.
so these past few months we were
forced to do radical surgury
that resulted in a lot of down time,
loss of much of the old message base
[except on cd/dvd]
and very slow response times,
etc.
you've been living thru all this.
now i'd say we've pretty much
stabilized again
in a better configuration
to continue growing in the years ahead.

I agree Hip,Even I havent been online as much as I used too since the kids are mostly outside and I'm the one watching them and joining them with daily walks etc.

i was just browsing some stats
on daily 'new threads' counts
and just today
we hit a new high for the month,
41 new threads in one day.
last similar 'high'
was march 31 when we hit 40.

i dont know whats "normal" or "average" as far as members joining on a website, and posts too. but to me , what your reporting sounds fairly busy. and it only appears that its picking up steam with each new day.
everyday i see a new member posting in threads and contibuting, and whenever im in chat it seems pretty busy.

I'm taking a statistics class at the moment, so I can't help but wonder about this stuff...
I don't know what data you've got to play with, but:

What's the mean number of posts per member per day?
What's the average amount of time spent per person per day on Mycotopia?
What is the busiest day of the week, on average?
What is the busiest time of day on average?

Any graphical info on this sort of stuff?

I'm sure at least one of these is redundant, so ignore any questions that are. I know time is valuable.

weeknight evenings are peak times around here,
proly wed-thurs max.
harder to pin-point the other stats requested
as visitors complicate the numbers a bit.
i think our polls showed the
typical 'topiate spends about 7 hours a week here,
or about an hour a day.
in that time they average about 1 post each.

I shall remember to not take a stats. class then. Or else I might have to go scouring for some means of hunting the software down.
