Outdoor Victory Garden: Phase 2 / Step 1
So the Meth Head came thru thank God. Not a "great" strain or anything, in fact it's a tad lower than even commercial standards. But then something by far beats out nothing no?
Anyhew, I'm not looking to do anything beyond popping what few pencil holes I'll need to drop in germinated seeds and making the few 3"ish sized holes to promote additional rooting points where I'll be taking the LST method a step further, I dont want to make alot of watering trips so I'm hoping the addition of more rooting points will reduce my need to, hopefully. Mabey one a week to give a Miracle Grow bump to things but nothing more.
My really big concern right now is the local soil conditions. The whole area is covered in about 2" of fallen pine & red Cedar needles, rotting branches and so forth. Beneath this layer is an additional 3" deep layer
of a fine mulch / hummus of the above layer, THEN I finally hit soil,,, 7" or so of nice black earth & sand before hitting a 2' layer of mixed size sandstone rocks with either a very soft sandy clay packed between or what looks like a super-nutrient packed black mulch (guessing due to mulch from the upper level working it's way down into the sedimentary stuff?)
So as is, the soil seems pretty well suited to growing stuff and it's already supporting alot of undergrowth, but my big worry (Next to hungry / sleepy Deer & misc. critters) is that the soil might be far too acidic from all the pine and cedar, dont have any pH paper on hand thou I think I'll dig thru my mound of Tek books and see if I can find another way to check pH. But just judging by the type of "Topsoil" would it seem likely that I'll need to ammend it somehow to prevent the roots from burning?
