![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Lawmakers Want to Outlaw Pot-Flavored Candy
Monday, 20 February 2006 wsbtc.com In Georgia they believe that marijuana flavoured candy encourages kids to start smoking pot. In Europe you can buy this kind of candy everywhere, it doesn’t contain any active compounds so it is really difficult to make it illegal. Quote:
ATLANTA — Candy that’s flavored like marijuana would be outlawed under a bill proposed in the state Senate. The effort, spearheaded by Sen. Vincent Fort, D-Atlanta, is one of several throughout the nation targeting increasingly popular candies marketed with drug-inspired names like Purple Haze and advertised with slogans such as, "Every Lick is Like Taking a Hit." Marketers call the treats a harmless novelty. But anti-drug advocates say they glorify drug use and encourage children to smoke pot. "Should a 9 year old be able to go into a store and get a bag of chips, a soda pop and some dope candy?" That’s ridiculous." said Fort, who announced his bill Thursday at the convenience store where he said he bought the candy. Fort’s bill, which was co-signed by several other Democrats and at least one Republican in Georgia’s GOP-controlled Senate, bans the sale of any "marijuana or hemp flavored candy" in the state and calls for a penalty of up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine for the second offense. Companies who sell the candies say the lollipops, gum drops and other treats are geared toward adults and that they advise retailers to sell the candy only to people 18 and older. The web site for Corona, Calif.-based Chronic Candy acknowledges using "hemp essential oil" in its products, but maintains that the oil is legal. Critics say that, regardless of its content, the candy makes using drugs seem more attractive to children who may not have tried marijuana themselves. The Chronic Candy web site features photographs of celebrities, from rapper Snoop Dogg to actor Verne Troyer, eating the candy or wearing clothing advertising the company. Chicago’s city council and Suffolk County, N.Y., are among the local governments that already have banned the candies. Lawmakers in several states, including Texas, Michigan, New Jersey and New York, are considering banning or controlling their sale. "They not only sell the candy, They sell a drug-induced lifestyle."

but equal blame also goes to the crass marketers who try to cash in on pot's popularity by making a bunk product that targets youth. without such money-grubbers those politicians would need to find honest work. | |

Funny how it was a democrat. Also funny was the lack of any controversy for many years regarding "candy cigarettes." Remember those? They were pure sugar (just another drug, essentially) and even had a red-colored 'cherry' at the end. Or "Chewing tobacco" style gum? (Big League Chew etc.). IMO, it's the sugar that's the danger, not the flavor! Now I'm not surprised it was a democrat, I just think it's funny. So many 'heads professed to like Clinton, yet more smokers went to jail under his watch than any republican prez. Hillary ain't looking after the tokers, either. Hell, Alabama's Attorney General filed a brief in support of medical marijuana fairly recently thanks to it currently being a State's Rights issue, and the AG was republican of course. I am neither, so I think it's all funny. Update: To protect "the children," everything has been banned. Or made compulsory. One or the other. |

Over friken candy. I fell as hippy does.. you wont even be able to think of gettin high. What i wonder is, when one of those politicins family /friend gets sick with whatever and needs the cannabis.. Will they have convient amnishia about their past views/votes.. I hardly think the everyday candy eatin age kids thinks.. "Oh this is like weed.. i need to smoke it' mentality. I think really there is more for out politicians to fiddle with.. I guess they are just gettin bored. |
