| $1 Salad bowl Terrarium - grow update 12/8/06
FOAF has been growing in a salad bowl. This offers lots of advantages. 1. It's a terrarium so you don't have to mess around with misting. 2. You dont need to fan. 3. Lots of surface area available for fruiting. This cake is on it's third flush. The cake is equal parts verm, coir, and cow poo, spawned with 3/4 of a pint hawian cake that had already been flushed and dunked twice over perlite. The spawn cake was made using Hippie3's supercake formula. Use of Surface area has been maximized. These cakes grow on all sides. The bottoms grow out as well. The lids of the salad bowl are concave, this forms a small grow area underneath. The B+ seemed to fill up that space better than the haw's. You can fit a dozen of these bowl in a Rubbermade tub container easily. If you worked out the surface area for fruiting available Vs. flat trays, bags, etc. you might be suprised. The bowls have twelve drill holes covered with micropore just above casing level. The lid has twelve taped holes around the perimeter as well. This seems to hold in moisture and alow gas exchange. Once the projects are incubated they are cased with coir and put in fruiting. When pinning starts the bowls are flipped over and the top becomes the bottom and vice versa. No need to mist the terrarium keeps humidity well. FOAF thinks there is lots of potential here. If he incubates a little longer getting to 100% colonization of the bulk sub, this will give the project more power and better fruiting. More fresh air might give a better result. Using a strong invitro strain could help yield. Adding kelp, bee pollen, and flax seed to sub may help as well. Looking to get the fruiting power of Gollys mini trays (In praise of mini trays [ziplock sandwich containers]) using expanded surface area For fun FOAF is going to colonize a cake inside a traffic cone to see what happens !! you got, it FOAF cases it during incubation a week or so before the flip because the strain is rhizomorpic and he doesn't want overlay issues during incubation. Coir is better than verm imho because it sticks to the sub better and isn't as messy. You can case it once it's flipped, but due to terrarium holding in the moisture it isn't critical.

Sweeeet Poo...! Good things come in small packages...Ya got a nice harvest man .... There really is a huge advantage to low ratio spawning , The whole Pasturization of the "bulk" part is much less critical for colonizing because of the rapid spread of the myc - So just boil it,nuke it or bake it... There is so much inertia to the growth that any problems are rare.. |
