![]() ![]() ![]() | FOAF's account of things
"The substrate is horse poo, that i got for the frizzle from a ranch. the farm hand couldnt speak english much good , and my mimingof a quivering stooped man with a cane (to signify the "old" dung) worked well enough. The amount it took to make that bed (about 55 pounds, dry) was brought to field capacity and was pasteurized in 2- 30 gallon (dah HUGE ones) ziplock bags The bags were tied to a beam and placed in a 55 gallon drum of boiling water. I tied the bags to the beam with twine to A.) keep the top of the bags from falling over B.) to keep them still, and from touching the sides of the barrel C.) helped me remove them but itmay have just been a waste of time and was unnecessary ![]() I kept them down in the water with 2x4's.. the same ones i used to make the frame that covers the bed After putting the bags in, i allowed the water to cool down to 170 degree's (give or take) and kept it there. Letting the bags "chill" there for about 2.5 hours, they were pulled up and were used the following morning (about 6 hours later) The hole was a good dip in the ground.. maybe 3-4 inches of sub, tapering off at the edges *shrug*. It was lined with the stuff you use to keep weeds from growing in your gardens. Its like a tarp, but unlike tarp it breathes and has tiny little holes in it, that lets water through. Layering was accomplished like so: first some grains, then sub, then a shit load more grains then sub REPEAT. Everything was spread evenly The bed was then lined with copper wiring. There seems to be less insects and snails than previous beds.... but dunno for sure if its working. the frame is just some 2x4's nailed together and then some painter's drop cloth nailed onto that.. the plastic undersiding of the cloth has partially fallen through, yet still holds water.. its pretty good at helping keep the humidity up.. with some watering the bed is pinning rather well and there has been no rain in a week and the temps are well into the 90's during the day picture update soon!!"

That is amazing! My only question is why it took so much poo for that much space. 55dry lbs of poo seems like a ton to me. Is that mandatory? Pass along to your FOAF Great Work and great photos! wonderful information and technique Peace, Subbal

well 55 pounds isnt alot when you spread it out also, its more food for the myc to eat more food, bigger mushies, and i suppose more flushes Copper wire: Yeah its "stapled" into the ground around the bed i just used staple gun grade staples, and pounded it in around the edge of the myc.. Im not really sure if it worked but there wasnt a teeming amount of rolly pollies (pill bugs), which is usually the case. it might have been the spiders or beetles that ate them. Im thinking a better idea would be to unload a bunch of spiders on the bed that would keep Cockroachs down, who seem to have eatin a few caps The bed was checked before the caps were opened, and there was seen a huge (wolf) spider chillin on one of the caps His name was Guardy but he ran away before a picture could be taken umbrella, check the attached pic, and youll see it in the corner of the pic, also on any of the over head pic, you can see a bit of it

sorry, the copper wire is for the snails exerpt: "Wrap copper tape/wire around the stem of the plants. On my peppers, I wrapped a small piece of copper wire around the base of each plant. The copper gives slugs a shock and stops them from getting to the leaves of the plant"
