![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Dooby trys growing desmanthus leptolobus
I got these seeds from a friend. After becoming interested somewhat in spice, this botanical caught my eye. It is supposed to be similar to mimosa, and we all know the good stuff about mhrb. It does not grow tall trees, instead it grows this weed like ground hugging/crawling/sprawling lil plant. Seems cool enough. I found this site below on the net with some info about it including some nice pictures of it outdoors in its habitat, some closeups, and some pictures of the roots! http://www.troutsnotes.com/sc/Desmanthus_leptolobus.htm This is a picture of the seeds I received minus a few I planted. That is also what looks like the seed pod shell. (3 pics of the seeds are attached including one high res shot) ![]() So having some seeds, I set up to start a few and see what happens. I was told by someone in chat here to score the seeds b4 planting. So, I took a really sharp pair of sterile scissors, and knicked the ends on about 6 seeds. I then took these and put them in soaked rockwool cubes. Actually, they are some sort of horticulture cubes, but same idea. ![]() These were then placed in a big ziplock partially open to keep them moist but allow some air change. This bag was placed on top of a lil floro shop light on the edge because it throws off some nice heat on top, and left it there. Within one day, one had popped already! Within 2 days, all except 2, and within 3 days, all except one had germinated! That one never made it . So, 6 planted, 5 made it, 3 looking really nice now.Have had them under a cool white T-5 dual 24" floro light setup on a near 24hr light schedule. Recently moved under a 400 watt hid. Not super bright, but they seem to like it just fine so far and are growing rather quickly. [IMG] [/IMG]The 3 nice ones have already been transplanted to deeper seed pots by directly placing the whole cube right in them. I read and/or was told they can get very large tap roots, up to 3 feet long. I already saw that tap root shooting out the bottom of the cubes, and why I opted for the deeper pots. ![]() ![]() One suggestion for future transplanting given to me was/is to use waste baskets, like kitchen garbage pails, cuz they are not so wide, but are nice and deep. Also, they may have clear ones to put something over and pull away to see the roots when/if I want... Dunno if I'll be doing that, but it's a cool idea. Even if I just use some dollar store garbage pails! hahThe growing medium is a mixture of coir/verm/perlite and dats it. Coir seems to really favor roots, and I think we're gonna want a big ass root system here, so that's why coir was chosen. Along with roots, I want seeds, more seeds to spread around here to friends at topia and to play with. So that will also be a goal. Fert mix is a very mild solution of Canna's coco ferts and Earth Juice's Microblast. Coco mixed in at 3ml per 2 liters and EJ Microblast at a rate of 1ml per 2 liters. This will be adjusted as needed, etc. Might even be a bit much for them now. New growth is starting off nice and with a redish hint and then turning green. Also, when darkness falls, the leaves sorta curl up/in a bit. Will have to get pics of those soon too. Sorry for some of the blurry pics, my camera was not cooperating. Will keep the good pics/updates coming though. No worries. I would say they are almost 2 weeks old. |

go doob! knicking these seeds can be a rough task. i used a glovebox because the seeds would go flying across the room looking good ![]() the 5 Desmanthus Illinoensis plants i had last season grew from seed to about 3' until they died in the late fall, which is strange because they should be able to endure a little cold. i will have to try again. good luck with the D. leptolobus |

More updates, pics from March 1st, 2007. Camera still being a lil off. The last pic is ok though. Looking nice, starting to get extra side growth now already. ![]() I saw this on one early one, the leaves on a shoot were all falling off. And then I saw it today on this one. You can see it right in the middle on the right. Not sure what is causing it, or if it's normal. But, worth mentioning. |

![]() ![]() | http://www.entheobiblica.com/03.115-...Desmanthus.htm sells trout's book on cultivation of Desmanthus (I have this book). In another month it will be seedling starting time where I live, so your pictures inspire me muchly. BTW, I've extracted DMT from the root. Got 150milligrams (three doses) of DMT from a kilogram of dried root. |

Are you kidding me?! Those friggin weeds have DMT in them? I see that stuff growing ALL over. Are there lookalikes that are nonactive as well? They also look very similar to those plants whose leaves close up when you touch them. This is positively great news! Actually, after further thought, I've seen pics of mimosa hostilis as well. They look similar, so I shouldn't be so shocked. I just never put two and two together. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Wikipedia says some stuff about 'desmanthus'. Not much though really. Click the link and it'll take you there. This is a snippet from it: "Desmanthus is a genus of about 24 species of herbs and shrubs and is sometimes described as being suffruiticose. It is in the subfamily Mimosoideae of the legume family Fabaceae, with bipinnate leaves. Desmanthus is closely related to Leucaena and in appearance is similar to Neptunia. Like Mimosa and Neptunia, Desmanthus folds its leaves in the evening. It is native to Mexico and North, Central and South America." What it says about folding it's leaves in the evening is true. From what I have seen so far, it does not like you messing with it's light cycles very much. Going from light to dark too quick and too often really messes em up and causes a lot of the lil tiny round leaves to fall off. Also, they were not liking the super bright light so were brought back to the floros are actually rather far, but are growing far better and quicker since. Been getting busy with some other things here and there so I have to make sure I put some time in on these babies I'll get some updates (pictures) up later tonight if I can. |

As promised, some picture updates. 2 plants looking pretty nice all and all. The others, you can see what I mean about the stress and the lil leaves falling off. But, they are still kicking with healthy new top growth so all is well.. soon as it's warm with no more frost they head to the outdoors.![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() So, not super doobyish just yet, a lil embarrassing those couple are, but things happen. heh Had to share so you can see what I mean with those leaves falling off... We'll get these babies looking good though, no worries. |

in the us theres a tree called mimosa or tree of heaven, albizzia julibrissin that looks very similar to what you have there dooby. i think it has phototropic leaves, too. definitely in the mimosideae sub family. cool plant, has anti-depressent qualities in the bark used in TCM (traditional Chinese Medicine) i wish i had some cladistics papers so i could see where the albizzias and the desmanthuses branch of. also, these guys are releated to acacia too i B leave..

It was commercial Illinoisis from two different vendors. One was whole root (had to use my 2-hp electric chipper, then the blender). The other was a fine dust which the vendor claims was the rootbark. Both yielded roughly the same.

I'm gonna try to clone some for the hell of it, why not... hehe These have been moved outdoors now. They went out yesterday April 30th. Will get some updated pics as soon as I can. So far they seem to be loving full sun. They were getting ignored somewhat indoors so now that they are out they hopefully will take off. |

Ok, updated pictures as promised. These really do look a lil sad and embarrassing... but, it's my own fault, not been caring for them properly, were not in doobyland. Now though, they have been brought back home and out to the powerfull sun they go. A few are better than the others. There's even some green trich growing in one of them.. ick.. but, I'm gonna get these all nice and going good, never fear. A lil adjusting and transplanting will be done next thing.![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Those babies are growing like weeds man. Nice job they really do grow fast eh? Do they slow down a bit at a certain age or do ya know?

Well, in the past month, they've sorta halted... due to lack of proper lighting, right watering schedules, etc... I'm waiting for them to really explode with growth now and harden off with the full sun and grow big once they get transplanted... Kinda hard to say how their growth schedule is because of this past month of slow/halted growth with em...

Had to pull this back outta the vaults... ![]() I thought these had all died for various reasons, I left em out though anyways, and sure enough, there is one sole survivor! hah I've been too busy to germ the rest of the seeds right now, so I'm happy this one made it! I'll get some pics up as soon as I can. I transplanted it outta the lil black pot there into a nice 4-5 gallon pot. The mix is some regular garden soil, some sand, some coco coir, a lil perlite, a handfull of compost, and some peat moss. Already in a day or two of transplanting, it looks VERY HAPPY I'm wondering how these make seeds... If I am lucky, perhaps this one alone will make some viable seeds. |

Plants can get damn large in a couple seasons, a single plant assuming the mass of half a dozen large plants as it sprawls sideways. Amount of sun and rootspace are important in maximising growth and getting flowering in the first season. Rootspace is also important for rootbark production and in getting those chunky roots with food reserves to survive the winter months. |

Yeah, I grew some a few years ago so I learnt a few things about them. First off they are a weed so they are pretty easy requiring minimal care and grow fast. They are also prolific seed producers. I feel many more peeps should be growing this one because they are so easy and they give so much satisfaction. My plant love is coming out here. They also like rootspace and any confinment here will slow down growth. I grew a number in medium sized containers which reached a height of two feet and produced seeds in the first year .A friend put one in the ground (an unfertilizes garden bed) and it ended up covering an area of two meters diameter, hence my earlier description. So my advice for serious growers is get them in the ground and grow them like weeds. ![]() The seeds have a such a hard smooth shell that nicking them will make them fly clear across a room. The way around this is to rub them between sandpaper just enough to take a little shine off. I then soak them in water a couple hours then leave them between moist paper towelling to germinate. Any that haven't swollen and germinated after ten days goes through the sandpaper treatment again. Thanks for posting this grow thread Doobs, I hope it will encourage others to grow this beutiful plant. |
