![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Reishi Block ...
So this is my very first edible attempt ever (other then the failed reishi monotub). I thought this block was doomed because its been sitting forever not doing a damn thing. I let it get a little dry when I was tweaking my greenhouse in. I just rigged it up to an ultrasonic running 15 minutes every hour piped in from outside and its working great. So I was re-arranging the blocks and fiddling around and I find this! Damn things have a mind of their own I swear, not sure why they didnt fruit from the top of the block ... maybe because it got dry early on as I was getting it dialed in. Not to sure ... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() So I had to cut them out .... if I get conks the first time out Im gonna be pumped ... lol ![]()

Eww, I can't imagine finding a mass like that and calling it "edible" Big Block bro, congrats on the success! Although it looks disgusting, I'm sure they will taste incredible.

lol .... acually no, they will taste like shit - but thanks for the compliment! haha Reishi do not taste good, however, they are incredibly good for you. Borderline magical .... feel free to google it. Reishi has been known for its anticancer, cleansing, immune system boosting, and many other properties.

Man these things grow fast. They are cool as hell too. This is the first block thats the furthest along. I have three blocks total right now in the greenhouse. Its about a month older than the other two though. ![]() ![]() Heres block #2 just starting to "pin" if you can call it that. Its more like blobs just appear and start to segment slowly increasing the lenght. WEIRD ... very alien like. ![]() ![]() ![]()

Thanks guys ... its not really a log, just a gallon ziplock baggy with pasturized aspen bedding, home depot sawdust and one quart of millet spawn on the first block. The second block thats just starting to pin and the third block that hasnt pinned yet are made of pure paper products (used paper towls, shredded office paper, and shredded cardboard from a cereal box and a pizza hut box, crusty cheese and all). I just boiled a pot of water on the stove, added a used coffee filter with some spent coffee grounds to it, then slowly added the trash .... used paper towls, tore up pizza box/cardboard, and shredded office paper until all the water was absorbed. Then I put the lid on the pot and let it set there until cool. Then I took a couple gallon zip lock baggies and dumped some grain spawn in the bottom, then layered in the pasturized paper stuffs alternating with a layer of grain spawn. Then I took a knife and poked various holes in the bag here and there .. then off to incubate. Very tenacious mycelium I can tell you that. The shit will eat through anything! Also, oddly enough, that second block that is pictured that just started pinning .... seems like its going to do better then the wood block.. it has more pins anyway.

Man, these things are so freaky to me I swear - like aliens reaching out to incarcerate the world ...... or something lol This is the block made from wood based substrate thats fruiting first: ![]() ![]() ![]() Oddly enough the two blocks made out of trash (paper products, cardboard, etc, etc) are doing way better. This one has the blobs I pictured earlier, but theres a TON of pins developing on the top and sides ... probably 10 or so in total on each block Heres the main blob ![]() ..... and then a few others coming out from beneath a piece of colonized cardboard. Coooooll

Lucky you!!! Looks like you're producing conks. They grow when the Reishi is kept in a high CO2 environment - like enclosed in a bag. I cut x's in my bags before I saw the formation of pins. Traditional fruitbodies emerged only from where I cut x's. Conk formation occurred in the top of the bag where there was little FAE. Great job and keep us posted. I grind them and cap-'em for a daily dose. |

Thanks guys! They are rockin Ill get new pics here in the next few days. Also my oysters are bustin out too so Ill update that thread as well. I wouldnt use pure coffee grounds bud. I know you cant be short on paper though. Hell just take old notebook paper, your bill statements, envelopes, tear up an old pizza hut box for cardboard and other paper products. Then mix in SOME coffee grounds into the mix. I found that used paper towels work great as well. Just bring a pot of water to a boil on the stove, add your coffee grounds to the boiling water (which will basically make a weak coffee solutions) then slowly add in your tore up notebook paper, paper towels (I use the cardboard rolls and all), cardboard and other paper products until its all soaked up. Then just put the lid on the pot and let it set until its cool. Once cool, wring out the paper by hand to get out excess moisture, layer in a walmart bag or any other bag and sprinkle your spawn over it, alternating layers until the bag is full. My oysters and king oysters are LOVING paper products. I got this per lazlo's paper bag tek.

Sounds good. Right now I'm running Stamets' Pearl Oyster on three different substrates-- 100% starbucks, 50/50 old news, and pure paper. About what ratio by volume would you suggest to add coffee grounds for Reishi? The only reason I'd like to do pure grounds is the ease of prep, since they come in a 50lb bag already pasteurized at field capacity ![]() Is there a minimum useful substrate size for fruiting Reishi? Thinking of sandwich-size bags to increase my spawn, since I only have a small baggie of inoculated dowels. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | "By the way, those are ugly fruits" lol .... I hear ya ... I think they are rather sweet looking to be honest. The ones on the paper blocks keep trying to conk out though, they will literally start conking out, and then start acting like they are going to antler out.... back and forth.... so they are actually just forming big blobs .... lol. As for how much coffee grinds to use ... theres no specific formula, just eyeball it. A used coffee filter or two that still have the grounds in is good. Ive never heard of anyone growing on 100% grounds though. I thought coffee was very alkaline??

Excellent grow!!! In order to grow conks reishis like more fresh air (less CO2) and Light. I Got myself a shelved greenhouse too, but i dont have any huidifier, so ill be using perlite. Got like 15 bags going rightt now. I see your reishi is not unloading spores yet. Hope it does, spores are good for ya too. Good Job there! JoY. |

Ganoderma Tsugae (which prefer coniferous woods, in contrast with Lucidum which prefer deciduous hardwoods) is probably your best bet for antler reishi. Tsugae holds the same medicinal properties and it's highly debated which species of the Ganoderma genus is more 'potent.' The Chinese classics describe different medicinal uses associated with the color of the Reishi. I know nothing about this, as the only Lucidum I've seen have been red or white.

Awsome grow! Where did you get your sample you're working with? I went hiking behind my house 2 weeks ago and found a Ganoderma Tsuga. I want to hike up there and take a sample to culture. Any pointers on where to take a sample from? |

Thanks guys ... Ive been away from the forums for a bit sorry it took me so long to respond. Those blocks were knocked up with sporeworks strain Reishi ... They did well I think I ended up with like 61 dry grams off the three blocks, I simmered it for about 3 hours down to a liter of liquid, then turned off the heat and steeped about 12 bags of green tea in it for 30 minutes. Once done I just put the liter of liquid in the fridge and took 1/4 cup per serving and would put it in a small drinking glass and down it like a shot of tequila or something lol. Nasty shit but I like taking it as a shot rather then trying to make some mixture that will still taste like shit, but have to be endured longer ... If I remember correctly the calculations came to approx. 4.5-6 grams of dried reishi per shot .... somewhere in that range dont remember the exact calculations I figured out at the time.

Ozz, they are beautiful, I can't wait to get started with the reshi. I have found a few wild reishi's, leaving them undisturbed, can they be transplanted with the wood they are growing on? or can a tissue sample start an LC? spore print? _j0se~wanz~sum~homegrown Cafe`reishi~too.
