![]() | impulse sealer vs. vacuum sealer
Whats the difference between an impulse sealer and a food vacuum sealer? The food vacuum sealers are for PE (poly ethylene?). Do you think they would work on the PP (poly propylene?) spawn bags? My only concern is that perhaps the food sealers don't get hot enough to fuse the PP spawn bags??

the foodsaver brand is an impulse sealer hooked into a vacuum channel. works the same exact way, just has the electronics to pull the vacuum then seal the bag. some impulse sealers are more easily adjusted to thickness and type of plastic.

I don't use either. Electrical cable ties work great for sealing, and they can be cut off so you can reuse the bag. The black ones are rated for high temp and don't melt in the PC. Bailing wire also works if you twist it tight. Just a suggestion as they're cheap. RR |

Thanks for the tip Rodger, I'll give that a shot also. I was thinking of a sealer just so I could seal some air in the bag, not sure if it's really necessary though but would make shaking a little easier. Can you pull the tie tight enough to make it truly airtight?

a decent impulse sealer is a handy device with many uses, mine has adjustable temp control so it handles many grades/thicknesses of plastic. i do leave some air in spawn bags, no vacume needed unless you're storing shrooms. |

Have you checked e-bay or the local office stores in your area? I checked Staples on line and they seemed a bit pricey. But i would bet that you could more than likely find one in your price range on e-bay. Best of luck to you!

My friend put in a bid on it, If it is what Hip linked me then it is well worth it. Those same ones on Uline are like 150-400 bucks a piece I am thinking that spawn bags are way less trouble than jars as far as stealth. I have a feeling that if uncle sam finds my friends mason jar collection it might be a tip off. Any other uses for impulse sealers would be appreciated. Thanks!

i have a non foot pedal version made by the same company as the one your friend is bidding on. It works well. dont even need to turn it up passed level 3 or 4 to do most hobby related seals. you need to turn it down below 1 to do a ziplock baggie without burning threw it.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Impulse Sealer Pricing
I'm looking to buy a new impulse sealer and was wondering why there is such a huge fluctuation in prices. Is there a noticeable difference in quality between a $40 12" sealer and $150 12" sealer with the same specs?

I don't know, but I bought the cheap one and it's fine (though to be honest its a really nice sealer) the best deals can be had by people trying to unload property rather than sellers selling things.... also - if I was to go back and do it again I would have bought a wider sealer..cause mine is lame. I have this little handheld device called a Eurosealer that is like a like a clamp with a wire that you press down against a pad and drag across the bag to seal it. It's a little clumsy, but it was only $6.99 new at Bed Bath & Beyond and takes AA batteries.

I'm guessing most of us around here don't have much experience with the expensive version of anything available cheap at Harbor Freight, but that more $$$ means fewer little headaches like the hot spots, at least that's the hope. You get what you pay for... IF you're lucky!

Can't say I've had any troubles with the HF sealer, but then I've only sealed maybe 50 bags with it. Just lucky I guess. Yeah, uline is good stuff, and in general you do get what you pay for.

![]() ![]() | Cheap Alternative to Impulse Sealer
I was looking through a catalog when i cam upon this little gadget. I know its not as good as an impulse sealer, but for the money I think its worth a shot. Theres a retail store by me who has these in stock and I plan on buying one as I have some bags coming in. I'll let everyone know how they work. Has anyone tried this thing before? http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=95863 |

I am interested in hearing how this works. It says good to 4 mil. And its cheap enough to try. I was kind of "Sticker Shocked" when I looked at impulse sealers at the store. I'm sure they can be found cheaper, but I just thought they were much less! G'Luck

Clever little thing. Good price. Got me curious. If I were going to seal many bags with it, I think I'd invest in a couple of rechargeable batteries. I bet that thing eats 'em like crazy.

Eh, no. Get something reliable when it comes to buying an impulse sealer. You definitely get what you pay for when it comes to impulse sealers. Electronics in general really. Check ebay.

As mentioned in another thread, I got the Harbor Freight sealer (regular type). Low price, and I've had no problems, but others have had various issues with fast wear-out and questionable seals. That little unit is probably like those things in the infomercials. Looks like the best thing since canned beer, but never works when you get it. Though for 3.99 I'm almost tempted. But, when you think about the time and effort in making spawn bags, good tools are worth it. Do it right, or give Hip the business.

A clothes iron works at least as well as an impulse sealer. You need to put the end of the bag in a fold of paper and iron over the paper 1-2 cm from the end of the bag. The iron should be at maximum power and you should iron for half a minute or so. After that, let it cool a bit and remove the excess paper. You are left with a solid seal with the plastic fused together and the paper stuck to it. And after you use the bag you can just cut off the 1-2 cm that are fused and use the bag again.
