Insula brain region associated with addiction to nicotine

Sounds like it's only 18% effective, but interesting:

A "seminal paper". Whatever. I'll believe that when it is replicated a few times. And then on other drugs. And then replicated a few times more. AND when it is shown to be of some value to us. Other than by lobotomy, that is.

Learn about the salience theory of dopamine if you want clarity on addiction. Make an educated decision whether or not you are addicited. Then, if its your choice to quit something, do it. Get the help you need if you need it. Don't wait around for some crap study to tell you how to do it. Just do it.

Hey Space Doubt, thanks for the info, don't take my last post as being rude. There is just a lot of really good research out there (and help out there) for those that need it. Your link is very educational, just hot off the presses. If there was any hostility sensed in my post, it was toward the person claiming it to be "seminal". "A study of 69 people" is not seminal.

But I thank you for your effort and the start of a conversation.

No worries, Bobcat, I'm very sceptical of such a small sampling as well. I did calculate incorrectly before, though (I was a bit tipsy ): only 19 of the 69 had insula damage, so that would mean about 68% quit. Could be total flukeage, but I'm interested in new brain research, and thought its connection with tobacco might make it thread-worthy...

Oh yeah, its thread worthy. And interesting. I may have went on a little voyage there with the second paragraph of my first post. I guess that is my contribution to the discussion of this. Its very easy to get caught up in these things. The idea that someday you can poke your brain or take a pill and it solves a problem is great. Yet in reality, that only solves a symptom. In reality, the instant fix is what your trying to correct. "Are you on edge? Smoke a cig! Tired of smoking? Take this pill!"

Fixing a life requires a holistic behavioral approach. A biological, psychological and social change. One that starts with putting the cigarettes down and just doing it.

But yeah, its a totally cool study that will hopefully lead to new therapies.
