The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is my new recommendation. No boring philosophy, no disqualified opinions on culture or spirituality or other things we might have strong opinions about, just some good natured science fictiony humor. Plus the movie is coming out in a month or so, so its good to read the book 1st so the movie can be truely appreciated (if it stays true to the book) or ridiculed relentlessly (if it sucks and takes tons of 'artistic license' with the plot).

I second the Hitch Hikers Guide, it's hilarious, introspective, has a very interesting veiw on the world, and holds some nice tidbits of truth in it.

Plus, it's british humor, which i love, and i already have it, so i don't have to buy anything...

we can narrow it down, vote and set the dates for read/reviews.

Serious, philosophical, tragedy, comedy, paranormal, time travel...there aren't any standards and next round maybe we'll read your book on Knitting with Dog Hair or whatever.

Think we can come up with something by Friday afternoon?

I'd be down with the Hitchhiker's Guide. I was also going to suggest Dante's Divine Comedy. And another one, now that I think about it: Rupert Sheldrake's "The Presence of the Past."

I'd again like to suggest breaking open the head. (look it up. It looks very interesting)

but I'd be down for hitchhikers guide

I could enjoy some English humour right now.

Just how much do you think there will be to discuss in hitchhikers guide though? I want to read something we can dissect

I've read it before, there is actually a surprising amount of stuff in it the bears some discussion, in my opinion at least.

Interesting veiws on life and such.

It's a short book, I say a week at most. Then we'll have time to tear it up before the movie comes out.

Let's try to have it read by the 20th. That should give people enough time to find the book and read it. As you say, it's a short book.

Lets push back the date to the 25th. That'll give my copy time to arrive and should leave us time to discuss the book before the film comes out.

umm.. depends on whether you do all 5 books or just the one labeled hgttg.. there are 5 books in the series that make a solid good sized book when ya include em all.. you can get them all in one bound edition called "the more than complete hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy".. i suggest we go for that one as it contains much more of a whole story and doesn't leave you you hanging as much at the beginning/ending.

I'll read that, but I would also enjoy The Bible. I think it would be interesting to hear what all have to say as we dissect the different books. We could even pick just one book of The Bible, (ex. Leviticus) then go to a different book someone wants to read. Sort of an alternating sequence between The Bible and random books we vote for!

    Either way, I'm game.

I suggest we begin with the first book and decide whether we want to continue after that. Mine should have arrived by now... humph

it's all good. read it a zillion times.. but i gaurantee if you start out w/ the first book it 1. won't make much sense and 2. won't feel complete unless you continue to all 5 stories in the series.. they really are one book broken into 5 shorter stories.

It seems there are several people here interested in reading the Bible as a group. I think this is great, but obviously a significant undertaking. Perhaps we should start a Bible book club thread. Also, I would recommend reading a companion such as Isaac Asimov's guide to the Bible. That book in particular is a secular exploration of the Bible as history text, and so far (I'm reading it right now) is excellent.

    Done!!!

    Quite an original book.
Lots to laugh about and lots to think about.

The vogons are an excellent representation of everything there is to hate about cops and feds.

And, well, its quite true that humans still think digital watches are cool.
At least I know I do...

    good call

I was thinking specifically of the incident where the vogon is dragging Arthur and Ford to the hatch to be put out into space.

I just got back from a midnight showing of the movie, after finishing the second book yesterday. I had thought the movie covered both the first and second book, but apparently it's only the first. The opening scene was really great, but the movie pretty much goes downhill from there. It's entertaining, though, worth seeing, but the books are of course better.

I just read this thread. Ill get a copy today! I read it a long time ago and loved it.

May I suggest the Dune series as a future book? The bible, its always a good read. I did read the book "how to knit with dog hair." According to the book, collie hair is the best.

well, better get to the library!

I also rather like the bit towards the end of Dent's stay on prehistoric earth, where after some mind boggling boredness, he decideds to go insane, and imedietly things start going wacky on him.

I've made that descision... After things starting to not work right at all, i though "Ya know? screw it, if i'm going nuts, i might as well really go nuts..." It did me quite a bit of good, really.

Course, i'm insane now, but hey, whatever works :P

Saw the movie. Read the books many times, last time maybe 6 years ago. The movie is the best adaptation of Book1 that I have seen yet. There were a couple of radio shows and a couple trys at Dr. Who type adaptations, but this one has a nice budget and people who seem to care for the story. I give it Four Thumbs Up.
