I've been meaning to pick up one of his books. Right now I'm reading Tourist Trap by Carl Hiaasen and I've heard that RWW is a lot like him but better

Just finished 2 books by Dean Koontz, Life Expectancy and Frankenstein Book One. Both excellent reads by an author who has always captured my imagination with his eye for detail and great caracters.

I've read every thing Koontz has wrote to date. Frankenstein is in paperback at Wally World.

I've read all of Carl Hiaasen's books but I'm more fond of RWW's writing style. Besides, Hiaasen is a Gator.

I'll definitely ck out the rest of RWW's work. I'm hooked.

I'm just starting one called Omnivore by Piers Anthony. The say you can't judge a book by its cover but it was a sci-fi with shrooms on the cover so I think thats about as close as I'm likely to get to reading exactly what I want

Omnivore is myco fun! I have read a bunch of Peirs Anthony (he is central Florida author most famous for his Xanth fantacy novels.) Giant ambulatory mushrooms that wanna eat you is awesome! If you ever see Firefly by same author and you like a good sexy horror novel, I recommend.

Milton's Paradise Lost is hardcore - I find it amuzing how little the bible talks about Hell and how most description of the Christian idea of Hell is from Milton or Dante, and if you read them, they're really doing it for the opposite purpose. One can make a Hell of Heaven or a Heaven of Hell; Milton dropped the hot shit on people and most of them never got it. I'm also a big fan of Orwell, 1984 or Animal Farm, it's hard to pick a favorite. It really is. Damn... If I'm thinking philisophically, Animal Farm; when I'm thinking critically, 1984. I think. Has anyone here read Choke by Chuck Palaniuk?

EDIT: Yo how about Milton's Paradise Found? I heard it was way not as fun and much shorter - I figured as much as the heaven books in Paradise Lost were boring as shit...

There are only 4 books which I stand by, and although they dont really fit into the topic of what you all are reading, they're well worth the time

The Great Gatsby by F Scott Fitzgerald
    Moby Dick by Herman Melville
The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway
    Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain

A mycotopia book club. Would you be interested?

Lots of interesting books out there and lots of potentially interesting discussion material.

I'm always willing to discuss books. In fact I just ordered a couple of books from Amazon including Jonathan Ott's Pharmacopeon, one called Tripping, about various experiences with enthonogens, and one on how sacramental use of hallucinogens will shape religion in the future.

my vision would be of a book club where anyone who wants can suggest a book for everyone to read.

A quick vote could take place, and the winning book would be the next book to be read.

Perhaps 1 book/month would be reasonable, as I know some of us have busy lives.

A thread could be kept running for each book.

i would consider it but i mainly only read texts with hands on education, science texts, etc......i usually read to learn almost strictly and rarely for enjoyment....i dont really care for fiction or sci-fi etc so a book club for me would be somewhat redundant........however, maybe it would make me want to engage in books that i normally wouldnt read.......

    so, im for it.....

    Thumbs up

Perhaps this might work better if we limited our choices to genres related to the interests already exhibited here at Mycotopia?

Also, I've noticed that the administrators/moderators all seem to be pretty taxed with everything they are already commited to doing to keep this site up and running.

So maybe rather than a separate forum for only books, maybe if someone had a book they wanted to discuss, just create a new discussion thread, and dedicate it to discussion of said book. Also, the appropriate subject area could be used, books like Ragnar Benson's Action Encyclopedia of Practical Knowledge and Proven Techniques could be discussed in Resist and Rebel, and something like The Psychedelic Experience, by Leary, Alpert, and Metzner would belong in the General Discussion or perhaps Lifestyles.

The KISS principle should definately apply here. But if we can develope this idea without requiring modification to the existing infrastructure, or extra (gasp) work on the parts of admin, then This mycophobe thinks its a feasable idea.

What say You With Special Priviledges, or The Almighty HIM THAT IS IN CHARGE? I summon you powerful beings to answer our requests! And advise us on the outcome of our chosen actions!

ya I wasn't thinking new forum or anything.
Nothing to give the mods more work.

I don't think we need to put a restriction on genre, because the decision will be by a vote. people can suggest what they want to read, and if others don't like it they will shoot it down.

Sounds like there are a reasonable # of people interested, so I will kick this off and start a thread in Lifestyles (which, by the way, always makes me think of condoms lol). Come suggest a book and we'll take a vote in a couple days.

Could even do articles or short stories or something short like that as well. Somethings for people who can dedicate to reading a whole book a month or whatever.....

    Could be fun.

    Mycotopia book club: redux

Welcome to the Mycotopian Book Club: Official thread #1 (read 5)

    Here is the plan:

Those of us who would like to participate in this bookclub will presently vote on a book to read.

The winning book will be acquired by members and read over a set period of time.

We will then procede to tear the book apart, analyze it, disect it, digest it, discuss it, and give our frank opinions of whether or not the book's author is fit to walk the Earth.

Please post/repost your suggestions for the bookclub's 1st book to be read. When all suggestions are in, we will vote on the first book.

My two suggestions for the first book are:
Welcome to the Monkey House, by Kurt Vonnegut
Breaking Open the Head, by Daniel Pinchbeck
