    VW Bus

I have been in the market for a VW bus. I have looked at alot of them both on and off line and I ran across this one on E-bay. I would never own it because I think its dumb, but can you imagine laying in the back of this one on a large dose of mushrooms?

Any VW bus is a good VW bus.
They are extraordinarily good vehicles. Not the most reliable, maybe- but easy to work on, easy to find parts. You can always get help when you need it, and a friendly wave and smile as you drive down the road. Get it in good shape, it will last another 30 years.

Oh yeah, you'll push it- but somebody will stop their car to help you. And more than likely, it'll be somebody you'll be happy to meet. I miss my old bus, I really do.

I've had two in my lifetime. I loved them both. They are quite simple to repair. I am going to get a hardtop westy this time so if it breaks I can camp right then and there until I get the parts Besides the girls really like buses for some reason

I swear by the VW bus, as I've recently purchaced my 6th bus. It's not as old as some of the others, but a 1976 hardtop is still a classic.

Sure they beak down, but don't most other cars. To me, I call them the ships of the dessert, because they are like the energizer bunny, they keep on going. Of course, you have to get all the little quicks out first, but once have done that you have a good running vechicle that will take you just about anywhere in the world. For the price it's one of the most versitile vechicles ever built. Buy one and fix it the way you want it, paint job and interior re-design included, then you'll own a vechicle that you can drive across the country, while being able to sleep in the great bed you've installed. Meaning no hotel bills, good gas milage, and a home away from home. Peace.

the colors are just wrong, i mean they're too happy for me. I need some burgundy, indigo, and darker greens. although i do love the in-the-clouds feeling it has, just needs a different color scheme.

1971 is my favorite bus year. Front disc brakes were new for the year, and it has the 1600 stand-up (bug type) engine.

The pancake engines are not as predictable. I had a professionally built (never mind the 2 that I built myself) pancake for a 1974 poop the bed w/in the break in cycle- dang ol' valve seats on 1700cc and greater were not great designs.

There are a *lot* of junk buses out there. Bad wiring, bad mechanicals, problematic rust spots (esp. rocker panels), hard to find/ expensive parts are just some of the joys of bus ownership.

Get the best one you can afford.

I had to weigh in on this one- I used to rebuild and sell old vws. Fun stuff, but be careful if you need a daily driver or don't have a place to monkey with it.

Good luck! They are super fun to drive!

Oh no, don't get me started on this thread!!! I've learned my lesson on Vdub buses. When I was younger I owned a few. Almost every trip I have ever been on in a bus has had a few breakdowns. Prepare for alot of repairs!!! And try to keep the speed down on the highway, I used to get tons of flats. But, if you must have one I'd get a split window w/ safari windows. I was always fond of those but, never owned one. The coolest part of the VW bus was riding on top of the front wheel. I guess in the end the VW buses ended up owning me (repairs) instead of me owning the bus. Hope ya find a good one.

PS: People loooove to steal those hubcaps!!!! Keep an eye on her.
