![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | The Cold Atlantic.
The ice has been here in our part of the Atlantic Ocean for a while in small amounts,Now there are miles and miles of ice as far as the eye can see.In the past week it has moved from the horizon line right into shore. The coast line is riddled with large icicles dangling from the tops of the cliffs and slightly melting in the sun,and a large amount of ice build up along the waters edge.I really have not had much of a chance to get out with the camera due to work n all,but I did manage to get off a few hours early today and decided to pack up,and head down to my favorite beach.I arrived at low tide so the ice had moved out quite a distance, but I did still manage to get some descent shots.I will try and get back out there during the weekend when the tide is in.For now here are the shots from today's trip to the beach.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | It is a pretty amazing sight that's for sure, especially at high tide when everything moves into shore and they start to get compressed on each other, then start to climb on top of one another. Its like a jungle of ice. When we were young and dumb growing up here the ice clampers were a playground for the insane such as myself.Could run out for miles and miles on the clampers. Then the tide would start to move out and you'd have to book it back to shore or risk being trapped at sea. There are small chunks of ice we call squishees,,,these are just broken pieces of ice from the larger ice bergs any where from 2-6 feet wide and about 2 feet thick or so,we would run across these things and try not to fall in or get our feet wet,,,they would sink when we jumped on them as we made our way to larger ice bergs...Insane when you really think about it but this is island life...Not a whole lot else to do.I definatly do not recommend playing on the ice,but shure do have some great memories and funny stories LOL.A few close ones but we were never seriously hurt.Knock on Wood...

Nice pics. Thks for sharing. I am a big fan of the salt water joys. I try to make my way to the Atlantic every year for vacation. Never been to the rock. One day! Cant wait to try some screech and flipper pie. Yum! I can almost see the Kaplan under the ice. Enjoy! AC |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Thank You Very Much mydarling,You know that photo is one of the only shots that the sun actually came out for me half decently the whole time I was on the beach. It would poke through in and out from behind the clouds once in a while, but it was mostly off in the distance, which made for a fairly grey day.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | The Ice Pack.
Well the spring is here now,but so is the ice pack,,,Again,,,and for the fifth time I believe this year. This weekend was just absolutely beautiful. The weather was perfect for this time of year,I would say around plus 3-5 during the day.The sun was shining brightly high in the sky with very little cloud cover, the Ocean was calm and not a hint of wind on the water,or should I say Ice.When I noticed the ice was in again I just had to take the opportunity to get down to the beach and get some pictures of it before it went back out,and probably the last time this year it will be in. So I packed my gear and made my way down to the water.I was amazed when I arrived,it was in so thick, thicker than it has been all year, and maybe more than I have ever seen it. It is very hard to describe the feeling I had while out there" I am not the greatest of writers by any means,in fact one of my biggest difficulties is to get out what I am actually trying to say." but I will try...The ice was in so thick that huge piles of ice was crushed and piled on top of more ice,and in places more then ten foot piles,or ten foot valleys of ice were common. You could go down in one of these valleys and not be able to see the shoreline or the horizon, being completely surrounded by big piles and craters of ice. There were huge flat sections with wide cracks and voids that led down to the depths below, some you could see water some you were many feet from water and could only see black. It was like being on another planet. There is of course the Fear,I mean you are walking on these huge pieces of broken ice, that are floating on top of the freezing cold Atlantic Ocean.A plunge under would mean certain, agonizing death. But this fear is very short lived and conquered quite easily by the sheer magnificence of the surroundings. The pack ice,in all its shapes and sizes, scattered for thousands of endless miles on three sides,in the most brilliant shades of blues and greens I have ever seen.It has me in complete Awe...The reflections and the shadows, the sparkles of the sun bouncing off the ice, which is causing little drops of water to melt from the tips of the giant blue pack ice was absolutely brilliant. The foreign nature of this place alone is enticing enough to make you forget about the dangers, just enough to build up the courage to take that step out.It took me a little while to build up that confidence as I was alone,so you have to make up for that part.As I would get further and further, the more and more I wanted to see what was behind the next piece of ice.Curiouser and Curiouser I went,I walked. I wanted to see more. What was next.A new shape?A new shade of blue or green I have yet to see?A crack or a hole in the ice for a seal to pop out of?extremely surreal at times but extremely real at the same time, that scary thought of,is this piece of ice safe?,will I crash to my cold watery grave?Does any one even know where I am if anything does happen still always in the back of your mind, but I still want too see more,so curious,it is just far too fascinating of a place and something eases my nerves or simply attracts my curiosity every time I think of the dangers. To the point where it became almost comforting out there, there was a peacefulness to it all that was just not there on the shore. I felt completely safe now,I had made a trail about 1600 feet out into the ocean on this confusion of ice.I had made it to the point I had envisioned myself sitting while I was on the shore feeling Like I have just conquered the world and sitting atop the highest peak.I pulled out my fat oil-weed combo J-dub and began to smoke that sucker back while chillin on tallest piece of ice I could see, just looking out into what seems infinity...That right there is what life is all about,,,it is the little moments like this that make life "my life anyway"so worth living.I am so happy I had the courage to go out and do this,It has been many years since I was last out on the ice,and the last time I was young and reckless and just out there for the rush. This was completely different,it was still rushy, but I took so much more of it at a time when I see things for what they really are...Precious. I spent a few hours there the first day alone on the ice before a few people showed up,a few young kid`s from the neighborhood.Young Dumb and still shooting blanks AHAHA,but fearless..WOW is that what I was like?..I stayed for a while when they arrived, shot a few photos of them out on the ice and got them to take a few of me which was nice,I was able to get in a few spots to get a pic where I just couldn't do alone...And I emailed them the photos of them on the ice, they got some pic`s of them selves playing hacky sack on a huge piece of flat ice with a large crack going down, pretty sweet pic,I wish I had pics like that from when I was young.I left shortly after and went to a new location. I wanted to check out a spot that I was told hundreds and hundreds of seals go every year.I got there after a 30 min drive and a 10K hike along the shoreline and eventually got to the point where the seals supposedly came too.No seals but a beautiful spot non the less and well worth the hike.I will be going back there later this week and will push beyond the last point I went and search ha few more beyond.I would really like to get some photos of those seals. Sunday the ice was in again,,,Sweet...I called a Buddie this time for safety,so dumb of me to go alone but fuck it,was so worth it.So he came and picked me up,we drove down to the beach, and upone arrival,The Cops, with a car load of kids,LOL,,,I mean it is the Atlantic Ocean and it is full of ice,NOT the safest place to play HAHAHA.So my plans were spoiled,,for now.I decided to give it a bit of time and go back.I wanted to get the sunset that I missed out on the day before so I decided this time I would prepare and stay a while longer.I packed myself a lunch, rolled a few packed my gear and went down with a couple buddies this time.We walked on the ice there just until before dark,we made it around a few points and managed to get to another beach by walking on the ice, something I have never done when I was younger. But again I have never seen it in this thick. Monday morning comes around and it is cold, and now we have a snow storm with about two feet of snow out there. The ground was clear yesterday LOL.Is it winter again on the Island.Well I am going to post some of the pics from this weekend.I took probably close to a thousand pictures between Saturday and Sunday and edited every single one of them.Fixing horizons, fixing contrast, cropping, resizing and the likes.Obviously I can not put a thousand pictures in this post but I will try and get as many as I can into it.It may take me a few day's to get them in though LOL.I hope you enjoy them.

It was starting to get dark fast and I am having to play with my exposures quite a bit to get a decent shot.Ice is hard to shoot for some reason and it is even harder to edit.

It's time to go home now, just have to make it off this beach first LOL,it was a little hard getting to this other beach,I had to jump on a sinker then to the side of the cliff and walk along a ledge, then jump back down onto the ice. This sinker was my worst nightmare that night.I was terrified at first I was going to jump on that little sinker and I was gunna get soaked up to my knees even my waist at the very least..But after a bit of hesitation I made the jump to get to the beach,I wanted to get there and get a pic of this HUGE icicle hanging from the cliff."they all turned out bad because it was too dark and I was kind of in a rush to get in and out of there coming back it was a bit darker, but after knowing how the chunk of ice moved when I jumped on it the first time I had no problems hitting it the second time to make my way back a safe and extremely dry way home.
