I recently got my motorcycle permit and have been looking for a bike. Kinda bad timing being that it's fall, lol. Anyway, I have never rode a street bike, but I have some experience with riding a dirt bike. As of now I plan on buying a used Honda Shadow. The thing is, I don't know how much difference there is between a 600 and a 750. Does either one perform better at interstate speeds? Also, does anyone happen to know what is considered high milage for a bike? I found a 2000 Honda Shadow 750ACE for $3,500 with 19,000 miles. I have also found a 2005 Shadow Spirit750 with 9,000 miles for $3,700. Any advice and/or opinions would be appreciated |

Get the biggest one you can afford...that 600 will seem awfully small after a few months. Not sure about the mileage thing but bike miles are like dog years...

I would go with the 750 for a Shadow. With a cruiser i agree you would outgrow the 600. A sport bike would be a different story. 19,000 miles on a bike is fairly high, depending how it was ridden. Hondas engines are pretty solid though. Fall and winter is the best time to look for a bike, i am sure you can find some good deals.

Join a forum dedicated to the model of the bikes you are looking at (http://www.hondashadow.net/). They will probably have a little bias towards their model but will be able to give you a good idea of the expected life of the bike, common problems and whether it would suit your riding skill level. It will also be a good resource for the cost of the bike. Just make sure you do a little research before asking too many regularly answered questions... I personally ride an sv650 sport/standard bike and it is more than enough for me. It's a good balance between a light fun bike and not too expensive insurance-wise. I imagine a cruiser is going to weigh more put out a little less HP per CC and be a little bit cheaper insurance wise. Personally, assuming you have enough riding experience I would go with the 750 over a 600. If you are a little shaky I would go with the 600, you'll always be able to upgrade later once you have a better idea of what you are looking for in a bike. 20,000 miles on a Honda cruiser is hardly anything but it may be due for some shop time if routine maintenance has been neglected (valve clearance check, etc). Again the forum should be able to help you determine what you should look for and how much of the required maintenance you will be able to do yourself. Now is a great time to buy. You should be able to get a good if not great deal... Good luck. |

9000k on a 2005 isn't bad. I wouldn't get in a hurry, take your time and look around. The colder it gets the better the deals will get.
