My brother turned me on to these training videos on Youtube. Good stuff if you're into martial arts, wushu. Western teachers don't discuss philosophy enough.

Sweet Bev thanks a lot. Actually never saw this video I have watched a few though. Your Def right about them not teaching the philosophy of it at all it seems. Just teach you the how of it if that makes sense.

Yes and that's very unfortunate i think. A very fundamental part of martial arts is the philosophy behind it. It's a lifestyle, it's not really about fighting an opponent. Anyways, there are a lot of good training videos of Gou Sifu linked from that youtube page, as well as some other masters. There's a cool video of a 94 year old qigong master, but unfortunately there are no subtitles.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | strategy is the foundation of all real combat. you can become a western martial arts teacher with just two years worth of training yoga in several months. but in that intensive physical training you miss all what is going on here in this video. That gizza in the white will have been practising his art for many years, and hes good at it as you can see with the dudes being frown around like crash test dummies. |

Fantastic example of some of the scientific aspects of basic self defense. If you push or manipulate part A part B becomes vulnerable. Its a beautiful thing to learn. I teach axis manipulation for close quarter fighting. There are so many tricks of the trade it would take a lifetime to master just some of them. My teacher was a big believer in if we perfected the right strike and that strike was the only strike we practiced our whole life, we will be able to overtake most people. You dont need a huge bag of tricks, just one deadly one you can control to fit the situation. The average street fight lasts 20-50 seconds before dominance is established and the beater begins pouring it on to the beatee. I love learning about martial arts, and I am always glad to see stuff like this! We must overcome what comes naturally to us because we arent born with the ability to fight well and our instincts dont serve us well if we are not trained, its a science and an art. Fights begin to move in slow motion and you can see weaknesses in a split second and take advantage of them. I recommend everyone interested in martial arts find a fighting dojo somewhere with a good teacher. If you fight for an hour every week youll learn by fire and you will get really good really fast with the right instruction. Thanks Bev! You rock out with your....ummmm you rock!

If you have a competent teacher, and are a competent student, the philosophy will show up when it is ready, and it will do so through the truth of your motions. Teaching philosophy will not teach you these principles of movement, but teaching the principles of movement will teach you philosophy. The philosophy is hard to grasp, the movements are hard to understand, which will you practice to find perfection?

beast, if your teacher is worth his or her salt you will never make a move without knowing why. so youll need to know both well to be effective. my teacher said without the philosophy you are simply swatting at flies.
