I can't seem to "manage attachments" when in the group or in PM's, so here it is. There's more info on the Geek Group page. That little circuit with the transistor is to drive a relay to control higher-current devices. You could also use a solid state relay.

If I can find any good tutorials on this kind of stuff I'll post links. The stuff I've found is for the most part pretty lame. If I can find some of my old textbooks I'll scan the appropriate pages and send 'em over.
