D E I, I don't think it will be readable by nomal movie players. I have a high end Sony movie player and it cannot read the disk at all. Just tried it.

Even tho they use the same physical disks, don't confuse a DVD movie disk with a DVD-ROM. A computer with the right hardware and software can read and or write both movies and DVD-ROMs. My computer is capable of doing so, tho I have not attempted to use the expensive dual layer disk (capable of 9GB of storage) that most new movies are written on.

A DVD-ROM is ONLY readable in a computer with a DVD drive. It is really just a very thin copy of files just as they would appear on a hard drive.

A DVD movie has been mastered as a single image file that includes the menus, main feature, special features, and extra languages and such, ALL in that same ONE file, readable by any old dvd player that is hookable up to a television.

Hip3, Alas, I found at 3pm or so, the big post office was closed early, as were the two local Zip-n-Ships. So, no way to get it to you before Tuesday. It'll be worth the wait.

I will be able to get you both DVD-R or DVD+R copies as needed. My recorder can do either. You will likely need to offer both as those bastards who manufacture DVD-ROM drives split into the two camps and never did make a single standard. For instance, my new computer doesn't care which type, but my laptop can only read/write the DVD-R format. The first two you will receive are DVD-R. Hollar if you must have a DVD+R for your machine and I will pick some up.

    ah i understand shed
so am i correct in assuming that there is no way that a comp can burn a dvd (not dvd-rom) that can be playable in a dvd player.

Errr...sort of. I have made several copies of movies (for archival purposes) and a few of special TV shows that I want to keep that play just fine on my DVD player for my TV. The distinction is that they are video and they are burned in the correct format for playing on a DVD player or a computer. DVD players can't handle the more complex job of dealing with the file structures of more complicated stuff (like web pages) with the exception of audio and MP3 and some picture disks in KODAK formats etc. Not that it couldn't, it just doesn't have the right software to deal with it. A computer is general purpose enough to be able to deal with any of the formats, assuming the hardware is capable too.

I was under the impresion that DVD-R is mostly utilized on Macs now and DVD+R on PC. HIP, can you make it in either format? I have not upgraded to my dual layer dual format drive yet.

I believe you will find it doesn't split up like that. Its more a Sony vs. Panasonic thing I think. Both of my Sony Vaio's can read and write the DVD-R but the newest one can also do the DVD+R and the dual layer disks. The current DVD is not so big as to need dual layer yet...in fact it has lots of room for expansion.

Hip3, Did you ever fix the menu html thing so we don't have to have 6 starting files? Should be fairly easy...I didn't try very hard on it, when it seemed to work the other way.

I recieved my mycotopia.net DVD today!

Its frigging great! I strongly recommend that you all get one, if you havent had the sense to do so already. The interactive growers guide is top notch, shroomy screensaver is cool and the amount of pure myco info is overwhelming!

You wouldnt believe how long I could look about in the Photo Gallery.

Thanks Hippie! This DVD is too good! Oh, and thanks to Shed for making the DVD possible!

Time to dig in a bit and see what I can find......... TEKs galore................

You give me FAR too much credit. All I did was have a big enough hard drive to unzip everything and then burn it to DVD. This is Hip3s baby all the way.

i'm still fuzzy on money order...

so i go to albertsons, get a 25$ money order

... and send it to the address listed?

I had to ship to canada for sporeworks, and I've never done that before, so I'm still not sure if it got there right . I'll find out soon though.

You know they never teach us these things in school >.<.

Any plans for an '05-'06 update? I would certainly sign up. I've just about worn out my existing copy doing reading and research (and I'm still less than 2/3 of the way through it). It is TOTALLY killer to have the 'topian archives in cities where high speed Internet access simply isn't available.

the vast majority of the data on the disk is not time-dependent,
    not obsolete.
the only material 'missing' would be our current vaults here on vbulletin,
the last year minus a 5 month data loss
so we're talking about ~ 7 months of 'advances'
    not on our current dvd.
    but
    in addition to the archives,
the dvd has much extra material
not found anywhere on the site any more,
and such extra goodies as the rhodium archives,
    an interactive growers' guide
and tens of thousands of posts lost
in the switch from discus to vbulletin.

i do eventually plan to put out a 2nd dvd
covering our year here on vbulletin
but not for some time yet,
    really isn't enough new material
    to justify it now.

Dig it. I had just started my hardcore lurking and learning when that last disaster struck. 7 months of pics and theories really isn't worth a total re-publish. As always, Hippie3 is looking out for us...

And not to at ALL imply that the information is dated or somehow less valuable than "new" information. I spend a LOT of time digging through the existing DVD. It's been my only Myctotopia touchstone for a couple of weeks of recent travelling and I'm damned thankful for it.

I can't say for certain, but it is straight CDFS file system.

Also, half the people around here (including the Hip) use Macs. I don't imagine he would be selling it if he couldn't view it.

I don't think the add in search tools and Interactive Grower's Guide would run on Mac, though. But, I could be wrong, I don't have a Mac to test with!
