| Hey sub, don't let these guys stomp on your dreams with humbug news man. Cow poo is worth a LOT more then that when collected and prepared properly, it's just as good if not better then equine/straw. When collecting your flops you'll go about it as if you would equine, look for aged, possibly speckled white with actinomycetes (firefang) flops, be careful not to scrape to the ground so you don't collect rocks, you'll not have to leech it doing it this way, but you will want to let it sit on a tarp for about 4 days. i believe the mix is: 50% shredded wheat straw to 35% Cow poop to 15%Vermiculite, water to capacity. mix and place into filter patch bag, pasteurize by your method. Ship. First you need a method of collection for both wheat straw and the cow manure, you'll be using vermiculite in it as well, as Cow flop needs some coaxing to keep away from the muddy side! Your wheat straw will need to be ran through a shredder multiple times. don't add ANY additives, you'll need Filter Patch bags to pasteurize in, and a method of pasteurization. I tend to spend around 300 a month on stuff like this, making my own is just out of the question, even though i know how.. A good quality bulk substrate like this is going for about 17.95 per 5lb bag, shipping gets more expensive as the weight goes up, BUT, if you're cool, you'll ship in 5lbs flat rate boxes at 5 dollars a box. any questions let me know man! |

The product you speak of is inferior and serious growers know this, that's why we all talk poorly of it... if sub takes his time and perfects his process i'd be honored to place an order at 15 dollars per 5lbs.

Sounds like you've got an opportunity selling pre-pasteurized bags. That's a real opportunity right there. The markup is huge on that stuff everywhere I see it. You have to admit nobody's gonna pay squat for dried cow poo compost by itself, it can be aquired virtualy anywhere. Though come winter you never know. I usually use cow poo compost to cut hpoo in my subs with coir, spent coffee grounds and verm/gypsum in there as well. Frankly I doubt there is any difference (between that and cow or horse for that mater) but with this diverse of a substrate I could hardly tell. Though you may be right I may have undershot the price of quality cow poo compost by like a buck.

flat rate box postage is not $5 as limeade said- you'll need a large flat rate box to hold 5 pounds, and that's $ 12.95 plus another $ .65 if you want tracking/delivery confirmation. also remember that slightly damp poo is MUCH HEAVIER than fully dry- it's pretty easy to make it weigh 5 pounds if the vendor is not honest. plus no one wants intact hard dry cowpies, so you must shred it [packs better shredded too] oh yeah, don't forget that breathing the dust is hazardous to your health, might even get TB or anthrax so wear gloves and dust mask when working it.

| Wow, sounds like I do have a good opportunity infront of me.. I have no experience growing whatsoever so I will have to study to know how to compose exactly into a good pasteurized substrate. Not there yet but I will keep you all posted. Thanks so much for the replies and feedback. Anyone know where to buy sturdy filter bags bulk? Peace, Subbal.

| Sub the biggest problem you are going to run into is that once you start doing it on a commercial level, you are going to need to pay for marketing. No forum or any website for that matter is going to let you advertise your services in threads or anywhere on their site for free. It isn't fair to the other paying sponsors. I can assure you that highly targeted marketing in a niche market on the internet is not going to be easy to find or dirt cheap. I am not trying to discourage you at all, I would love to see you succeed, but as someone who makes a living from the internet, I just felt like I should warn you that it is not as simple as putting up a website and filling orders. It takes money to make money, and in this case you are going to have to put a little out there and it may take a while to see a return.

| It's possible he could make some money if he sold to a few people on mycotopia/shroomery advertizing in the marketplace forums and perhaps with a link in his sig. Frankly the real deal would be in his ability to make a quality substrate since this could mean repeat buisness for him. I doubt he was thinking of retiring from the workforce on this idea from the sounds of it. I think he just wanted to see what he could do to make something of his nearby cow shit. I say you should do some serious reading like The Mushroom Cultivator and/or Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms by Paul Stamets. Both have good advice for substrate preparation and composition that could help you further your hobby and your efforts with this venture. Last edited by ScavengerType : 10-21-08 at 22:20. | He would need to become a sponsor here to do as you suggest- only sponsors can run a business in our marketplace forum or have commercial links in their sig.
