![]() | anyone tried this-- peanut shells
i used crushed peanut shells (shells were actually put in a coffee grinder, and grinded to small chunks, but not to powder) as a substrate. I noticed that jar colonized like brf. right now it is started to pin while its in the jar, i was wondering if i should try invitro, or should i case it? |

Peanut shells can indeed be used as a substrate. Simply crush the shells up, pasteurize, and spawn. Here's a few pics, orig done by mycofile. Overview: Strain: Creeper Spawn: WBS Substrate: pasteurized peanut shells (gypsum optional) Casing: peat based, pH balanced with calcium carbonate fruiting environment: Big Ass Automated Grow Room temps: 70's humidity: 95+ for pinning, 85-90 for fruiting, lowered to 70-75 after misting Fresh air exchange: 2-4 per hour Air circulation: Constant via mixing of fresh and recirculated air ![]() ![]() ![]()

Possible, but it's better to use the shells like a bulk substate. For invitro, BRF/verm is tough to beat, but most grains also work.

That pretty awesome, and you could make a trip to your local Roadhouse to collect shells!

anyone have a good write up about this method? -does it need to be pressure cooked? -add verm or just stright shells? -how fine were they crushed? powdered or just lightly crushed? -works with PK tek? -can it be shaked up like popcorn etc? -add verm or just stright shells? -any 'reciepies' for ratios? of water

i just either coffee grind, or hand crush and stuff the shells, than add water, top it off with verm, and pressure cook for 20 min. Innoculate and wait. so fair my invitro is going fine, but murphey's law still apply, so im waiting. I also used a a honey water culture to innoculate mines, and it fully colonized in little less than 2 weeks.

What an entertaining topic! Everyday I open my pantry and see the several tubs of pistachios I regularly snack on I ponder whether the shells can go to better use. Though the consistencies of peanut shells and pistachio shells are admittedly different, I'm still wondering if perhaps pistachio shells could be used as at least a partial substrate. Perhaps for wood loving mushrooms? Time and experimentation shall tell. |

thanks for the great reply waylitjim. so basicaly what im wondering is, will using peanut shells (basicaly free) in place of brf mix (price adds up, im sick of mixing big batches haha)? so basicaly, putting crushed shells in jars with verm on top, boiling (not PC) for an hour or so, knock up, then chronic tek with a double end case, work? its basicaly what you said just chronic tek+DEC instead of a full blown casing, right? seems like a big spawn bag + invitro neglect tek would work perfectaly with this as well? and again, what sort of ammounts of water should be added? just soaking the shells to capicity work fine?

Very cool waylit! I've seen a few different grows with peanut shells...some good, some bad. Thing I wanted to ask, Don't know if I overlooked it....but were those peanut shells that you used salted? I know a bulk of the grows I've seen that used it were done with unsalted shells. Thought that may be important to add....a lot of the failures i've seen were with salted.

Those large chain restaurants like Texax Roadhouse exc. where the shells are all over the floor of the building would be my first stop. Although they're salted and would need a heck of a rinsing.

![]() | shells
My father-in-law eats a half a bag a night. I'm going to have him save them for me for experiments. My only concern would be the salt. A good rinsing would be a must. I can't walk down a grocery aisle without thinking, Would that work for growing shrooms, that would work for a terrarium, etc...

anyone try the roadhouse grill method yet? that would surely solve the cost problem if it went through

me thinks there might be too much oil in the peanuts to just grind whole i wonder how boiled peanuts shells would work.. they are already pasturized.. but maybe too salty.. cool thread will be looking forward to some updates and pics LOST

I bet they would work very well if ground up whole and used as an additive to other bulk. Something like 70/30 with peanuts making up the lesser. The ligneous shell as well as the protein, carbs and oil would be spread out a bit- and mycelium would make short work of it. I would imagine they could dramatically fluff up some H or donkey poo.
