![]() | BRF Discs I remember seeing this a while back, but couldn't find the thread. I have been using these big Ziploc plastic jars for spawn cakes, they take a while to colonize but half the work for twice the spawn is nice. So I had two that I didn't need for spawn so I decided to try a little expirement. The size of them got me thinking that there would probably be some waste of nutrients in the middle if I just fruited them as cakes. So I decided to cut one of them up into 1/4" thick discs in the hopes of getting a better yield. It's nice to have a good sharp knife for this. In this pic you can see the plastic Ziploc jars I spoke of. ![]() Here is the first disc ![]() Here is them all ![]() I gave them a super light double end casing because I only had fine verm which I don't really like for casings. ![]() I decided to kinda treat it like a crumbled casing since the myc probably needs to recover so I covered it as I would a casing and put it back into the incubator for a bit. ![]() You can't see them in the pic but there are a bunch of tiny holes in the top. So thats it for now I am going to fruit the other one as a cake to see if there is any difference in yield. I am hoping more surface area will lead to more pins and they will take advantage of all the nutrients in this big ol' cake. If anyone happens to have a link to the thread that I blatantly stole this idea from please post it so credit can go where it is due.

![]() | there are a few similar teks around here Mycotopia Web Archive: Patrick's Sliced Flat Cake Tek Mycotopia Web Archive: OT's Wafer Tek as well as other variants. http://forums.mycotopia.net/mushroom...ek-edging.html (New Tek... "edging" :)) Mycotopia Web Archive: Eatyualive's Flat Cake Tek my only criticism would be i think the discs should be slightly thicker, ~1" to support large shrooms. but the concept itself is quite solid, you should see a good pinset. i also think coir might have been good in the casing. nicely illustrated!

![]() | TJ....I actually sliced up one of the substrates in my sandbags after a first flush. Very similiar, the mycelium did recover and produce quite well. I've just been to busy to document any of it. Way cool bro!!

![]() | I just heated up a needle and pushed it through the top for the inoculation points. I used six around the outside and one in the middle because of their size. I like them a lot more than glass, they are a little pricey compared to glass but they seem like they are going to last forever.

![]() ![]() | right on jesus i just got some similar ones from walmart.. 925ml.. so you figure it's about 3.5 half pints (250ml). and at a price of $3 for 4.. that's 3.7L total space for $3.. as opposed to $10 for a 12 pack of 1/2 pint jars which is only 3L total space. a good deal, imo, and you can steam them like your normal pf cakes, i did mine for 2 hours, more so b/c i'm lazy then any other reason. i used about 7-8cc to innoculate it.. 6 holes around the outside and 3 in the middle. lost

![]() | Update. I didn't get pics of the first flush but it came in at 16 grams dry. Not bad for one cake. Here are some pics of the second flush, the discs don't seem to want to flush at the same time, some are ready to harvest and some are just pinning. Overall I would say I am going to get much more out of this than if I had fruited it as one cake, and that is with less than stellar pinsets. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() i

![]() | Dry, I didn't get pics of the first flush and the pics of the second isn't nearly done. Heres a pic of a disc that shows what they looked like before harvest so multiply that by six. Works out to about 3 dry grams per disc ![]()
