    King Oyster

This is one of three ziplock bags that were steam sterilized awhile back and are finally showing sighns of life..I just popped them out of their baggies into a tray with potting soil to keep em' moist...

I kept them out in the barn where its cooler ,as they like low 60s to pin..

Hoping the weather stays cool enough for more development..

They're from a commercial culture which i used to knock up the bags of Rye grass seed...So far so good..

They sure hold true to the Pleurotus family name when it comes to mega-clusters! Sweet!

Great cluster! I wish my edibles were showing as much promise. It is already too warm here for my white buttons and portabella's.

    Good luck.

What is your air change/fresh air schedule like? Oysters require insane amounts of fresh air.

Hey Doob...They're just sitting in a cooler with the lid cracked open about 3 inches..The Rh is proly a bit lower than ideal though...It's pretty much a neglect type grow...Luckily the weather is remaining cool...

That's a nice cluster there. In GGMM it states fruit body development can continue fine with temperatures up to 70 degrees.

I may try to break out that dry tissue culture I have from the salt thread. I got one deformed ass mushroom, so I at least know it's eryngii. Come to find out my humidistat was way too high. Do you have problems with yours being out of wack? Like 15-20% off from what it's set on? I think mine may have spores in it making it inaccurate.

Although, you have one with the probe don't you?

I haven't used my humidistat in a long time but did notice that it was not always stable with changing weather ect.

Siam...I just threw in what was handy[pot soil], i'm sure verm or perlite would have similar effect...

    Try an oyster mushroom omelet!:

"Oyster Mushroom Omelet (from Lee at Black Earth Valley Produce)
    1/2 c. cashews
    1/2 small onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, crushed or chopped
    8 eggs
    1/2 lb. fresh oyster mushrooms
    1 c. cheddar cheese
    2 T. Tamari (Bragg's or soy sauce)
    1/4 c. water
2 T. canola or olive oil
    salt and pepper to taste

Mix the eggs and water in a large bowl and beat well. Saute the
mushrooms in a frying pan with oil over medium heat until dry. Add
onions and garlic. Cook for one minute, then add cashews. In a
medium-sized skillet, put a thin coat of oil or butter, add egg
mixture, and cover for one minute. add a layer of cheese. Pour
mushroom mixture over the layer of cheese. Fold over and cook for
    2-3 minutes."

Wow never seen oysters that loook like this. Do they fold out a bit more if they have more fresh air or do they stay "mushroom" shaped like these ones?

Hmm strange, cus oyster pins normally have this shape, furthermore their caps dont open up if FAE is low. But to see maturing fruit shaped this way is new for me. Please post a pic of the fruit when they have completly matured Nice grow by the way!

Well they did make a great omlette..Yum ..Both the stem and cap were tender and had a light nutty flavour..
I'll do these again in the fall ,as they are very easy to grow..

I used the steam method for 1 gallon ziplock bags which contained Rye grass seed and verm ...
After full colo, the mini logs are just set into a well draining tray and the potting soil [unpasteurized] poured in to provide a stable moisture source.

The tray is then just plopped into a cooler with the lid cracked open 2"
this seems to provide enough fresh air ,while holding good RH for nice fruit to grow...
I just water once a week...I think i may try this method with Shiitaki cause it's so easy...

The King oyster is my favorite. I think you will be dissappointed if you now try eating regular oysters, which are still good but pale by comparison.

Where would it be possible to obtain a spore print, or even better a live culture of these. No rush its too warm now, but have decided to grow these in the fall!
