    Another Pan Florida post

Lol.. couldn't resist..,yep another try with the Pan Florida's !

This time I injected spores into a mixture of (pop)corn and what we call..'Brinta' (picture),it's a breakfast meal that is made out of grains !
I used 5 % of this Brinta stuff,..seems to speed up colonisation too !
Couldn't wait..,and didn't let the corn fully colonize (95%) but I think it will work allright...

    I made two casing tray's.
For one casing tray I used...

    - 1/2 jar of colonized corn
    - 1 jar of a mixture of Horse poo (50%) straw (20
    %) verm (29%) and
    1% seaweed
    - and for the casing layer .. 1 jar of cactus soil (70%) and verm (30%)
Depth of the casing tray around 0,8 inch
    It's now in the incubator at 28oC till it's 90 % colonized..

So..I'll will updated, ones colonized.. prob. at the end of this weekend !

Damn, brother! You are a busy boy! So is that Brinta kind of like cream o wheat? How long from inoculation to spawning?

Cream o Wheat ?..never heart of it !

You ad warm milk and sugar to the stuff, and then it gets thick !
Easy on the stomach when you get up early, and want to eat something...it's tasty
It is an 'adult' version (don't know how else to call it) of baby food we have here !

..I don't know how long it took to colonize,..I think around three weeks !
Normally it takes four weeks to colonize ! (no shaking done thru the process...)

Did you mix this stuff and case it all in one shot?

Yep,..I never let it colonize before I add the casing layer !
The only layer I add, after 80-95% colonization is the thin verm layer, that I use in the last couple of month...

This verm. layer is not really a casing layer but it's more a protection against contamination and to keep the casing layer from drying out, because of my new (ventilator)heater !

Yes Golly,..like when I added grass to the corn last summer...

I think it will give you a couple of days faster colonization time, because the myc grows faster on it,and it works,as kind of a bridge between the corn kernels themselfs..bud it just a theory !
Maybe it gives the substrate some more nutes too !

A little update on how things are going at this moment...

The two casing trays are allmost fully colonized, and I am adding a little vermiculiet on top of the casing layer tonight...
Then..the trays will be placed in the terrarium, for the finial and most exiting fase..lol !

I will spray some water on the top layer for 4 days in a row,and stop after that,..waiting for the first pins !

    Hmm,everything looked very promising,..and I expected a big yield..at least 100 grams wet !

But instead,..I got very few pins (picture).. I haven't harvest them yet,but I think I've got only 25 grams wet !
Maybe 70% cactus soil for the casing layer was to much, they look dry,so maybe more verm. is beter !

I'm glad I have still some more Pans on there way..next time I will do it the other way around 70% verm..30 % cactus soil or something like that !

The pictures are not spectaculair, but here they are !

Yes, they sure are Dail8 !

I just visited the new vaults and read a tread from Bleuhelix...
He had some trouble getting it 'right' too..he had the same troubles, thought he had made a perfect casing and ended up poorly !

I think there isn't one way to go,..it's difficult, but I do think they like alot moister and fresh air,far more then cubes, and this is difficult to reach ..esp. in the winter.
I have to heatup the terrarium alot more, and that isn't doing the Pans any good !

But the next trays are fully colonized, so..still a couple of Florida experiment to go,till I try some new ones (Tropical and some others strains)
