    drill with 1/2" spade

    steps

    1. Drill hole between centre and edge of lid.

2.Place a ring of caulk around the hole on both sides

3.Insert stopper into hole, make sure there are no air spaces or leaks.

4.Drill 2nd hole 180 degres from the first hole (on the other side)

5.Place a ring of caulk around the ring on the inside

    6. Attach a precut peice of tyvek and put more caulk around the edge overlaping the tyvek.

Are those the plastic wide-mouth lids? They promote those as "not for canning", but it seems like I've read about people pc'ing them. What do you see as the advantage of using a rubber stopper over say just silliconing the hole? Looks well done.

I think the 'not for PCing' label is in reference to coming in to contact with and then storing food items. They are 'freezer lids'- I don't think they hold a vacuum seal like metal cap would and so food couldn't be stored out on a shelf long term.

I use lids almost identical to those...same exact injector ports, got 100 for 6 bucks shipped!...I like em because they look nicer than just silicone, plus they have a target in the middle. The difference in my lids is that I use micropore tape (grocery store or pharmacy) over a pieces of tyvek.

i have them lying around and they look cool . The last reason is the only reason you ever need to justify your actions. Period. I also find that looking good gets me the mycobabes, something that the silicone only chumps seem to have a hard time getting...lol, jk.

They probably work the exact same.

i had a hard time finding micropore tape today. Its a job for tomorrow.

Walgreen and Walmart will likely have the micropore tape...

It may be labeled under a different name though (porous tape, surgical tape, breathable tape, etc).

I like the micropore tape, except that it tends to melt away at the holes at very high temperatures.

i was looking directly for micropore tape, which is made by 3M. I guess thats why i couldn't find it, because i thought that the product was called that. They are bastards, just like kleenex.

Your local chain store should carry "micropore" tape. I don't mean to say it will be easy to spot on the shelf, but it should be there. The other stuff probably works, and i say probably simply because i haven't personally used it, but i like to stick with name brands in cases like this where the price difference is negligible and i've had results with it.

hmm, we have this exact same 'style' in the archives , Zen even sold them for awhile on MZMycology.
not trying to harsh your gig but this is not original.
but a pictorial is always nice
and if it sparks newbie interest
    that's even better
    so thx

i used some typar on these pics. How do you guys position your filter, on the top or on the bottom? And what type of caulk do you use?...i went with the underneath(grain side, and silicone II).

I added more airholes since typar has about a third of the breathability
