    Talking "Oh Canada!" on corn

Ok folks. After a year sabbatical, I decided to throw myself back into the game.

I’ve been sitting on 6 "Oh Canada!" syringes that were given to me on a trade from a member of mycotopia.

I wanted to do the easiest, least expensive method of substrate colonization with the goal of spawning worm castings in those plastic file containers (a la Doobydoobydoo.)

I decided on corn since I don't have to worry about vermiculite and whatnot. ( I suppose I could have done birdseed or rye berries or even hominy just as easy.)

I bought a couple of bags of "organic" yellow corn and am currently cooking it in a pressure cooker at 15psi for 60 minutes in order to hydrate it.

I'll strain it, dry it in a towl and add it to quart jars with polyfil holes.

Then I pc'd it at 15 psi for 1 hour.

I'll innoculate tomorrow morning with the “Oh Canada!” syringes and hope I get colonization within a month. Hopefully I won’t have to create a incubation chamber because I am trying to do this as simply as possible.

Pics at this point would probably bore the hell out of you so I won’t bother. Just wanted to give everyone the heads up that Joey hasn't lost his stuff. And give myself a place to post more info.

    yaargg

Never heard of that strain. I personally enjoy building incubators and FC's. Hope all goes will with your project and good luck!

I'm curious if I'm just reading you wrong, but this seems backwards to me.

Its not backwords, he is hydrating the corn in the PC, then he'll put the corn in the jars and PC it again.

Guess I just learned something new.

That wasn't mentioned and had me a little concerned.

I hydrated the corn in the pc for 1 hour per this tek ( http://forums.mycotopia.net/showthread.php?t=9903 (fast popcorn method) )

I edited the original post to clarify

*thanks for pointing that out Mr. Trips*

Oh Canada is a strain Captain Max at the Sporelab isolated. It is optimized for outdoor grows in colder climates. If you are working with it indoors you probably will want to incubate and fruit at the low end of the temperature range usually used. You may also find that people interested in outdoor grows in colder climates would be willing to trade you other more traditional strains.

I REALLY wish I had some herbal pics to show! I'm workin on getting some beans and a few lights. The border is uber tight atm so it might be a while. Hell, I haven't smoked herb in 11 months! wowzer!

I'm really hoping that this "strain" will allow me to colonize and fruit without an incubator. We shall see.

I was reading at the shroomery and they seem to dislike corn. Any idea why? Here I was hoping on something easy to spawn from. I hope it doesn't turn out to be hard.

That's the one thing about growing mushrooms that pisses me off. You have to have gloveboxes and agar plate isolates and humidifiers and shit in order to get good yields. And then things could get all f'd up by having a crappy, tainted syringe. I seriously don't have enough patience to sit around with glove boxes and flow hoods.

Bah, we'll see. I just want enough for my family and friends at Bonaroo. I usually trade for a ticket or something.

Looking forward to seeing pics of fruits. Foaf got original syringes from Max when he first introduced this strain. She has tried about 5 or 6 times using various methods and has never gotten them to fruit. They were very aggressive colonizers and extremely rhizomorphic, but she never saw fruits from any attempt.

    Please keep us posted!

I've only seen this stain fruit outdoors after heavy rains and when the temps were in the 40's and 30's. If you are trying indoors, keep those parameters in mind.

Thanks for the info Max and Shobimo.

That's not good news that you couldn't get them to fruit. I'm looking for an easy fruiter! bah

I looked at the syringes again. 1 appears to be Oh Canada and is labeled as such. It is very dark. The other 5 are much lighter, are unlabeled, and are made of different syringes.

This leads me to believe they are a different substrain. I'll do 1 jar of Oh Canada and 5 of the others and see if theres a difference. God willing i'll get some of them to fruit and my efforts won't be a complete wash.

    Peace all

Heres a boring pic of the corn substrate and a pic of the syringes. It looks like the only "oh can" i have is the far right one. The others are unknown as they were unlabeled when they arrived.

Foaf tried outdoors too, no luck (and she was able to grow ps cyans and ps azures in the same area she tried the Oh Canada)

    Good luck with them

oh you know the shroomery crowd, joey
old skewl thinks there is but one true way
i reckon their main problem with pcorn
is that kernal size is rather large compared to
say birdseed , the odds on favorite over there.
of course i just saw a member there mention
that she had finally, after 2 years of effort,
learned how to get her wbs moisture perfect.
    but really
other than quibbling of the 'best possible'
pcorn will get the job done nicely
and we have numerous grow logs here
    that prove it.
    unfortunately
the same cannot be said for that 'oh canada' strain.
not many reports on it, the few we do have are
    not too good for it.

Ok, so I knocked up the jars with the unmarked syringes. I said to hell with the Oh canada strain. I know someone that could work with it. I suppose I should change the name of my thread to "mystery sub-strain" lol

I think I'll be able to do an isolate next time since I've been reading up on Fahtster's iso tek ( http://forums.mycotopia.net/showthread.php?t=9625 (-Fahtty Isolation/Mycelium syringe tek- *REVISED*) ). It looks super easy (which is great for a lazy ass like me)
