Exclamation Flow hood safety!! varnish oil or latex? help me out pals..

i am making a 5' by 4' flow hoody, but i am anticipating on what to buy, i have been thinking on the varnish, but they have latex and oil.I think oil will last longer and stain deeper. but if i used oil to stain the oak, will the 91% alcohol ruin or even make water spots on the wood?
please help me out on which one to use so that sterilizing wont be a question of the future or even a problem.
I would guess oil about 5-6 coats, home depot sell the gallon for 33 bucks!! , but the shit is top of the line.... help with some experience huh.. i will post picks when i am done with it

I have a personal preference for oil, always got a better finish, but I haven't tried latex for years - it might be a lot better now.

Usually a wood finish says on the can if it's alcohol resistant. Most are, since ya never know when someone might spill their Jack Black on the newly refinished table!

Either way, especially with oil base, make sure you work in a WELL ventilated area, and let the finish cure thoroughly before use.

Wow, that's a HUGE hood! Can't wai to see it!

I painted my 4x2 hood with white killz II(2) latex. I dont like it at all and I plan on using clear polyurethane over the killz in the future. The problem I am having with the latex is the hot agar vessels tend to "melt" the paint and also it stains like you would not believe. two thumbs down for plain latex finish.

Poly's great stuff. If it's not heat resistant enough either (I don't know if it is or not) grab a trivet or ceramic tile or whatever's easy to get and easy to clean to set the hot stuff on.

btw Kilz is a primer and needs a top coat of something. If you don't care about nice woodgrain for aesthetics you might try epoxy paint. Rugged stuff, though expensive. Used it on my boat several years ago and it's still perfect.
