    Assassin bug (bloodsucking conenose)

I found this guy outside while I was watering the plants. I thought it was a really big, funny looking ant. Turns out it's a "bloodsucking conenose", also known as an assassin bug. They really do suck blood, and apparently they have a nasty bite.

It was difficult identifying it, because its wings are folded up or deflated. It must have just molted.

Now I have the heebie jeebies. I won't sleep well tonight at all. Enjoy!

    Some conenose info

Just wait until I find my next tick!

Bugs freak me out, but I love taking pictures of them. I love how digital photography brings out how alien and bizarre the insect world really is.

A friend of mine was in the Peace Corps in Bolivia, and was terrified of those things the entire time. He'd wake up with a dozen of them on his mosquito netting, since they apparently like to live up in the thatch of ceilings and drop on you at night.

They would bite you around your lips (the "kiss") and suck some blood. Then it gets weird. They will turn around and take a shit on the spot they sucked your blood from, which is how you get Chagas disease. Might kill you next year, might kill you in 20. I'm not sure if only the infected bugs do the turn-around-and-poop maneuver, but either way double-check that netting before going to sleep!

There is good evidence that Charles Darwin died from Chagas.

    Sleep well!
