![]() | I'm absolutely thrilled by what I found today and I'm really mad at myself that I didn't buy them. The tiniest little wide mouth Bernardin jelly jars 125ml or 1/2 cup. They were the cutest little things I ever saw. I'm going to start up the caerulipes again when I get my new syringes in the mail from Sporelab. I'm going to use the maple sawdust and bran again and the idea is to colonize the first stage as soon as possible and move on to pure sawdust without bran. This will eliminate the chance of contaminations sooner. So the smallest jars are best. The faster they colinize the better. But these are so cute, I can't get them out of my mind. I'm going to stop on my way home from work and get a box. I also have to go to the Canadian Tire and get another batch of the maple sawdust. I'm just about out. The tiny jars will be ready sooner and I should be able to get some into the garden just as the summer heat is gone. Of course I also have the print in the mail so that will probably entail some other method. I've never worked with prints since 1970 so I have lots of reading to do. |

![]() ![]() ![]() | We eagerly await your new adventure ... Gluk.. I really like the quarter pint jars for herb storage and such..Their small size can lead to excessive drying of the substrate with time... So adjust your filter hole size accordingly ... |

![]() | Thanks for the info about the drying out of the tiny jars. I would have thought they would have colonized so quickly that they would be finished before drying out. I was thinking of only making one hole in the top as the jars were so small so I guess my instinct is working again. Of course you have to realize that these aren't really caerulipes either, but ovoideocystidiata made from the rusty brown prints and the print in the mail is also rusty brown. They all originated from Llamabox's prints as far as I can tell. So even though Captain Max is still calling them caerulipes, they are probably ovoideocystidiata. Whatever they are is not that important to me, as long as they are woodeaters and can winter over in the garden. I do like the idea of a longer fruiting season than cyanescens or azurescens so that is why the ovoideocystidiata seems better. If they only fruit when the weather is cold who is going to see them. Last fall when my cyanescens was fruiting I just rushed past them to the garage in the cold and rainy weather without stopping to look. Here's my Slc 'Dream Catcher' blooming this morning. The tiny plant is about 4 to 5 inches tall and flowers are pushing 2 inches. The brilliant colour catches youe eye from the other side of the room. |

![]() | Here's a little update on the progress of my caerulipes. A few weeks ago I got the two new syringes from Captain Max as well as the print of ovoideocystidiata. I got the little jelly jars (125 ml) and put them through the pressure cooker. The wood is a bit different. I didn't have enough maple so I cut up a bunch of Birch shishkabob sticks into tiny lengths and added a bit of fine orchid bark that's been sitting in the basement for about 15 years and a bit of aspen litter. The texture seems very good and the caerulipes can have a choice of woods. I finally inoculated the jars this Sunday the 26th. Even though it's too soon to see any growth, I checked this morning, and of course I didn't see anything. Now every thing is done and it's just a matter of waiting patiently. |
