First experiments... pics from grains & cake in run .. :o)

Hello everyone,

Appx. 3 weeks ago I started some cakes, that was my first mycologic try ever...

these were 350 ml jars, classic PF recipe with coarse grade verm and basic EQ from dutch sellers. I don't know why but two jars were very late.

1 week after I bought same jars, but 200 ml now. Same recipe, same spores (not same syr.) just 2 innoculation points, one didn't do anything ...

Soon later, while exploring pet store for my dog's needs. I found what seemed to be wild birds seeds.. and so on ... Rinced 10 times, soaked 18 H, heated in water for 30 mn. sames spores, trough self healing silicon and a double tyvek filter...( tyvek is just above the grain, no lid beetween. Would it be a risk of contams, when shaking the wet grains ?). thes jars are 1 week old...

I also did some agar but cannot manage to make good pics, with my cam. but I think it's failed. I'm not experienced at all, but there's lot of white thing on it'm sure that it's not mycelium. Had a big problem with condensation & water in the petri. I poured the agar too hot I think.
I'll try to make decent pics and upload them later.

All these where pressure cooked for 1 hour in classic "food PC" one. 25 mn for the agar. Incubator is a double tub, with a 200 Watts good aquarium heater.

2 thermometers, one saying 30 °C , another 27°C .. So I guess it's OK.

My agar experiments went to the garbage, as i didn't trusted the excess of condensation.....

I plan to spawn my 3 jars to a mix of coco coir & worm castings. Do you have any good recommandations for this next step ?

Is it a good idea to add vermiculite for water content also (as mine is very fine) ?

I got some bee pollen, I saw on hippie3's supercakes formula that it can be a good nutrient source... should I had a little to my mixture or this is best with cakes ? what about the quantity ?

I'm a first time grower too but my cakes are still incubating. You gotta know I'm jealous!

They don't look big, but there's lots of them and how cute they are

. They must be very potent too.

Damn, while taking my last pic, I checked the cakes and found one that seemed contamined.

Here is the pictures. I'm not sure if it's really a contam, or a bad bruising, but the shrooms that grown on it looked quite unhealthy...

I decided to pick all the good looking mushies, and throw away the cake. Are they safe to consume ? they all look healthy ...

I think I see some green in there, it could be the lighting though. how are the rest of your cakes doing?

Just updating my experiments with my first ever casing.

WBS was spawned to a mix ov coir/verm, hydrated with worms casting tea. cased with the same, but with distilled water.

2 weeks in FC. I was beggining to worry about it, but this morning I woke up to discover what seems to be a very promising first flush.

I got a 2nd similar one, but mycelium hasn't poked through casing layer. It seems to be overwatered, as I got standing water condenstaion on the surface. could this be responsible of slow growth ? and what can I do to remedy ?

It looked like bruising to me. Did you toss those cakes?

The bruising is consistent with being dry and after a flush like that the cakes could have been really dry.

I tossed the 2 most bad looking cakes.

I dunked the others. they're currently on their 2nd flush. everything is going well. Smaller flush than the first one. but not a lot blue bruising.

I'll keep a close look to this drying cakes question in the future.

Next to harvest

I'm very happy with my first casing try, seems like I did it right !

Should I apply another thin casing layer after dunking, or put it back in the FC as it ?

What about scratching and what does this exactly do ?
