Red face sometimes it pays to dig through the garbage!

a while back i put these expired oyster bags out on the deck. they had produced 2-3 flushes each so i figured they were done.
they sat out there through freezing weather, snow and pouring rain for a good month.
well finally the weather subsided enough to get some yard work done. i went to grab the bags to bury them in a compost heap and behold!!! a nice little suprise.

the first two pics are blue oyster. it's amazing how different they look when growing outdoors in cold weather!

the next two are pearl oysters.. which look pretty much the same no matter how you grow them.

looks like TCO is eating garbage all weekend!

    much love

Da Catdaddy is not averse to dumpster diving- after all, one man's trash is another man's treasure..

But then again I walk the tops of fences and dark alleys, and call my feline lovers in the darkess, and in the moonlight...

well there's not even a sign of any contams.. there's still some straw left in the pearl bags. it just might. there's still new clumps coming too!

harvested some of the blues and a few pearls yesterday. kinda small though. i'm going to let the pearls go a little longer. i think they'll get bigger than the blues.

might be taking more pics soon

    thanks everyone!!!

    thanks jim!

the pearls are just wet in the pics.. but the blues really changed. they still have a blue color to the gills and underside, but the top side looks crazy. i'll try and get better pics. there's another cluster of blues coming too.

i know man! they are CRAZY lookin'. but they are oysters. just growing in very cold temps. 30's to upper 40's. today we finally broke 50! yay!

temps are about 8-10 degrees higher. the pearl oysters seem a little happier.

I love how resilient the oysters are. You can pretty much abuse the hell out of them and they raise an eyebrow and say, "Uh-Huh, that all you got?"

    Nice comeback!

Smile thanks! one' good to see ya hangin' around more

i'm thinking about building some bins especially for the junk bags and logs.. maybe add a little straw or sawdust and see what happens. it would be nice to see this on a larger scale. at the very least i'd end up with some garden compost lol.
normally, i'm not so lazy and these things get buried in compost piles.. but with the ramp up in volume and a busy lifestyle.. :sigh:

to think what i've been missing! these four bags, maybe.. 4-5 wet lbs of straw total have yielded close another pound after being thrown out. that adds another 20% to an already extremely high biological efficiency. had i known what i was doing at the time, i would have kept better track of the indoor crops as well.

heh, just found more pins forming on the other pearl oyster bag too!

still going!!! nothing really picture worthy, but one of the blues is putting out yet another flush. all the action is around the bottom of the bag, where all the moisture is, so i expect this will be the end. one of the pearls looks like it may go again too.. but i need to get this stuff of my deck
