Treasure Coast cakes + 1st automation

Here's a first automated setup. It's pretty simple, just a light on a 12/12 cycle and a small fan always on.

These happy cakes are Treasure Coast, multispore->liquid culture. They are just now pinning, with some good primordia around. I tried to get a clearer closeup, but it wasn't in the cards.

Oh yeah, and this log is brought to you by BeastMaster's budder recipe. Made up some chocolate no-bakes with it and they're delicious.

although I can't really call them no-bake anymore...

Nah, it's only 22 cakes. I split them into two different tubs. I used to put them all in one, but I want to give them more room to grow and make sure they get plenty of fresh air.

I was about to post that I was worried that all these were aborting. The caps are pretty dark... they look darker in person. They seem to be growing fast, though...

The best cake stacking trick I ever saw was to use plastic toothpics jammed into the top/bottom to keep 'em from falling over/apart.

Fahtster did post some pretty pics of tubs full of bursting with fruit cakes.

I think this is my clone candidate, the three largest in the foreground. They are a cluster. EDIT: Actually only two out of three are a cluster, I just noticed

This tub is lagging behind the other one for some reason... I'm still fiddling with the placement of the fan. I might have to get a couple of smaller, less powerful ones to get it just right...

I'll do my best to get some prints... I haven't made many at all, so I'll be learning as I go.

It's almost munchin' time

Here's the "lagging" tub. There was no time to take a clone or sporeprints... the hectic schedule is just winding up... FOAF will try on second flush...

BB, you're right... the color on the caps is weird as well...

These were double stacked cakes, so maybe the flush isn't that great.

It's always nice to peek in a tub and be assured of a bunch of good trips!

One suggestion I would make is to reduce the amount of polyfil stuffed in the holes, or add a few more holes. The long stems and smaller caps are generally an indicator of high CO2 levels. The fan in the closet is probably not penetrating the polyfil very much; another possible approach would be to add a hole or two near or in the lid. That induces a slight convective draft that automatically increases FAE.

*Edit: When I looked again I saw that you've already done the high/low hole thing, so I guess that means a few more holes would be a good idea. I really like cutting a small hole in the lid (6 inches by 6 inches), covering it with window screen (I use hot glue to hold it down), then covering the screen (plus a generous margin) with a one-inch layer of polyfil sheeting (comes on rolls, I like it a lot more than the loose fill type)

Twice as many cakes means twice as much CO2 produced. I think that tub needs more FAE.

I did notice that the stems were still pretty fuzzy despite the fan and monotub setup... I think extra holes will be the way to go.
