First grow... Poo/straw log!

This happens to be my 2nd grow... long story short i learned alot from my first and did get a few scooby snacks. (computer crashed during first)

Figured out all the variables... and thanks to all the awesome threads posted here by the kick ass topiates i got an awesome grow (i'm happy with it atleast)

Nice! Give it a good dunk after you harvest, you'll get some bigguns in the 2nd flush!

I'd like to give mad props to my wife for nurturing our little nursery practically 24/7 shes the best. with that said...

k heres some pics from today... any tips for harvesting?

do i have to harvest them all at once? scratch the log?

Yeah, pick everything at once. Just gently twist the fruits at the base of the stems. You will pull a little substrate with the shrooms, but that is okay (better than leaving dead flesh to rot). I would not scratch it--seems to be pinning just fine. Just dunk it for a few hours.

That is a pretty log!

You are gonna have a spore mess to clean up when you get back.

Sure enough the back side is practically cover with spores.

I knew what I was in for by leaving them for another day I just don't understand why its bad to have spores all over the place.

Does anyone know what determines potency? I read it somewhere but can't remember... was it humidity or temp maybe?

I like to pic them before the caps really open up for a few reasons. Spores make a nasty mess if it gets out of hand for one thing and they taste like crap. I also like to pick early because once dry the caps will be tougher for storage and don't get crushed into dust as easily.

Spores can also inhibit growth if left on the substrate too long. It is just a PITA to clean them up. It is not a bad thing, per se, just more work. Peace.

Genetics! Temperature, humidity, FAE affect the growth and size of shrooms only. Substrate may be a factor in potency too, but this is a somewhat occult and contentious area.

An experiment by German mycologist Jochen Gartz found potency can be increased by adding tryptamine/tryptophan rich material to the substrate. Many question the result but others claim adding stuff like small amounts of quinoa does indeed increase potency.

I have read that bee pollen in very small amounts (i.e., H3's supercake formula) can increase potency. Although I have used bee pollen in cake mixes, I cannot really attest to any drastic difference in potency--but I have a fairly low tolerance for psilocybin.

There is so much research that should be done with psilocybe species--and other actives. Mycology needs a Bill Gates/Paul Allen type benefactor!
