So there are several Pink Floyd fans here. Who thinks 'Dark Side of the Moon' was composed to 'Wizard of Oz'? Any other myths i.e. last track on 'Meddle' and '2001 Space Odyssey'?

I have also heard the band say Dark Side has nothing to do with Wizard of Oz. But, I have watched/listened to it at the same time and there seems to be a FEW parts that sync up well with the movie, I guess. Maybe it's just coincidence. Being realistic,, and an avid Floyd fan, I just don't see Pink Floyd writing one of their greatest albums (personal opinion) with the grand intention of syncing the music to the Oz movie. They would have to write the entire album, down to song timing, around the movie which seems like it would be a major pain in the ass unless they really, really loved the movie enough to take the time to do that for some reason. Why would they make an album just to match it to a movie? I believe they were more focused on writing good music rather than doing some mystery Wizard of Oz listen-while-you-watch album. But I don't know for sure, I can see why people would think they go together. Just my 2 cents. |

Yeah I think most everyone's heard about the Oz Floyd thing. That vid Weeee posted combining the end of 2001 and that Meddle track was just amazing though. There's a few points where the scene and music change together. Like going from the light tunnel to the surface of that moon (Io?), the change to the indoor scene where he gets older, and then the really eirie part was the end there with the Star Child looking at the Earth, the voices that kick in are alot like the voices associated with the monolith in the actual movie. And then it ends right on cue with the movie. If these two song/movie syncronicities are truely accidental, it gives alot more credence to that 1000 monkeys with typewriters could produce the works of shakespeare theory... That vid weee posted is definitely worth watching, though I'd suggest using the menu there to navigate to the video's actual page so that you can go full screen with it. Thanks Weeee!

Funny, its mentioned in five different posts in this thread, twice by me, one of which was in response to the first time you asked this question. Rather than repeat myself a third time, how about you check out the above posts, including the one that starts this whole thread out? ![]()

I remember back in high school when I found out about the wizard oz and dsotm. I bought a dvd online along with alice in wonderland with the wall. I used to trip out with my friends but we never made it all way through to the end (trip just took us elsewhere). Echoes the back side of Meddle syncs up with a scene in the movie Contact sorta like 2001 above.

this thread got me remembering... back a number of years when i first really got into psychedelics and first really got into floyd, i gobbled up everything i could - with regard to both of them. Eventually, of course, i came across dark side and oz. Later i came across a website which i just found out still exists (it looks shittier than i remember but the content seems to be the same). it's one of those sites where some fan(s) obviously have way too much time to kill (disregard the irony in that statement). here's the link : http://www.angelfire.com/co/1x137/synchs.html it's called the 'kubrick-floyd website'. this is where i first found out about the echoes/2001 synch, which, imho is far superior to the oz synch (tho the best part of the oz synch when the old woman, pre-cyclone, comes to take the dog...it's like an old silent movie). on the site, (amongst many other things) they link to a list of all the things that are supposed to synch up in oz and dark side (105 they claim). back in the day, we did the synch with the list and, as you may guess, many of them (if not most) seemed like a stretch. http://members.cox.net/stegokitty/ds...itive_list.htm the site goes on with other info too tho about links between floyd and kubrick ie. waters putting a backward message to kubrick on a solo album as well as kubrick requesting and getting turned down to use atom heart mother on clockwork orange. Then i remembered one last synch, that i did check out that was pretty cool. the opening scene of the shining, when nicholson is driving to the hotel synchs up pretty well (if memory serves) 'with one of these days', also off of meddle. finally, when just perusing the site again i noticed that it claims wish you were here synchs up with the movie videodrome, which i haven't seen. okay, ironically, i rarely listen to floyd anymore 'cause i find them rather boring. yet i just managed to bang out a small novel about their music synching up with movies that, no doubt, is rather boring...

I can't speak for the members of Floyd, but I know if it were me, had I done the work necessary to sync one of the greatest rock albums of all time with random moments of wizard of oz, i'd be proud enough of my achievement to tell everyone. |
