You harvest the seeds from the pods. They are in them. Plant before the weather gets warm. Poppies like cooler temps. 80-90 will just cause small pods at best. Afghanistan is a leader in the production of poppy pods I do believe. You should have fun next year in that area.

seeds are inside the pod, harvest seed when the plant field drys, turns brown. i live in south east texas and can grow october thru february i think.afghanistan is actually cold, it has alot of mountains and often snows but it does have its warm areas.id say poppys like temperatures from 45 to 75 f but it really depends on what type of humidity you have and what variety of seeds you have. |

you dont really need to plant in a good temp, poppy seeds can last years in the soil just broadcast whenever you get them. dont transplant poppys.the best way to plant them is burning an area, raking it and then just toss out the seeds put them in rows if you want.dont waste you money on seeds at garden stores unless they are really potent or cheap, use "spice rack seeds" go to a health food store.all the white seeds are good (persian whites, last and second to last photos).i think seeds for growing are red(4th picture) maybe this is when the seeds are right for harvesting but im not sure,it might be hen and chicks variety that has red seeds. anywhere with disturbed soil is good to toss out seed. heres a great pdf on growing poppys,i dont know if its been posted on this site before. |

![]() poppy's do not like extreme heat at early ages. Try sowing some seeds in the 90 degree summer heat and see how well your crop does overall. Is there a chance a couple will grow? Sure, but if you want a successful crop you want them well on there way before extreme heat and dry condition set in. (My definition of a successful crop is more than proving that a handful of the plants I planted will live to maturity.) So to say 'you dont really need to plant in a good temp' is a crock of crap.

Just to add a lil more info to what Cm has told ya. The seeds are found in the mature pod after flowering. Ripe seeds will be black to blue/grey. White, orange and red seeds are immature. The seeds will germinate in cooler temps very well. In temperate climates seeds can be planted in fall, germinate, and seedlings will overwinter just fine producing flowers in early summer. In places which have cold winters, seeds can be started in mid spring with flowers forming in june/july. The flowers do not like extreme hot weather and will lose their blooms the same day they flower in temps in the 90'sf. Poppies require lengthening/long days to produce blooms. Though they do not use phytochrome as its stimulatory chemical like many other plants we know . Lighting can be manipulated to force flowering indoors or out. See thread on photoperiod of papaver somniferum for a little more info on the subject. ![]() Not much point sowing seeds now unless you live in a place where days will be getting longer in the next few months. now if you'll excuse i think i'll drink this cuppa tea. poppy seed can overwinter right? so fall sowings should do just fine under a thick layer of snow. thanks for that pdf, it just goes to show how easy and how numberous poppy's can grow on marginal areaas.

Winter is fine, they go 'dormant'. Although I have never planted in the fall. Oh, and about the area of interest. Quote:
