I've been reading a lot about lock picking the last few days and I think im going to try it out. I think it would be real cool to be able to get passed something that suppose to keep you out plus it would give me something to do with all my free time.

If anyone is into lock picking I would start here they have lots of great info

http://www.lockpicking101.com/

I just though someone would find it as interesting as I do so I though I would post a good place to get info from.

Right on!

I did some research a while ago, never really applied it, i generaly just search till i find an unlocked window, or creditcard/knife the door latch :P

I did managed to pick a gas cap lock though, it was a fantastic feeling...

Had to do it to change the fuel filter on a car, they didn't give us the gas cap key, and if you don't pop the cap the pressure in the tank sprays gas EVERYWHERE...

Thanks for the site, i'm headed there next!

I dunno - sounds / looks to me like a site that should
be linked to www.breakingandentering.com - I'm not sure that
lockpicking can really be a "hobby," any more than
dumpster-diving can.

Sure, it would be cool to be able to get through locked doors,
but usually when stuff is locked, it's for a reason.

Stay safe and remember:

it's not illegal until you get caught

many states license and regulate professional
'locksmiths'
and anyone caught with picks who isn't registered is treated with suspicion.
picks can even be considered 'burglary tools'
so be careful about carrying them around.
thieves should be shot.

Well im sure that anyone that could pick locks could break into stuff but there are way easier ways to do it. Most of the time it easier to brake the lock rather than pick it. Lock picking has been done for years and they even have competitions now days. I think with most people think of lock picking as a crime but they don't really understand how hard it really is.

Safe-cracking is hard too, but that doesn't make it a
legit pastime. Most people interested in picking locks aren't
into it for the mental challenge but for the prize behind the lock;
I used to know a guy that could get into any car in under
one minute.

He never worked for a locksmith, if you know what I mean,
and last I heard he was wanted in several states.
Probably buried in a shallow grave somewhere or rotting away in a cell.

Maybe you should try model airplanes.

I guess 2-10 for B&E would be one way to occupy your "free time".
But then that time wouldn't be so free anymore

I'll bet they're doughnut conventions, too - if I was the FBI I'd just walk around with a video camera and sort it out later - can you imagine how many "interesting friends" you might find at one of those, especially if it's a big purse. That's not a bad idea to trap some stupid criminals, actually...

See? There are legitmant reasons to know how to pick a lock...

I love knowing that sort of thing, just because it's very intersting, and not many people do know it. It's a lot like growing shrooms in that way really.

It's just interesting knowlage.
To me, at least.

yeah, just because you learn how to open a lock w/o a key doesn't mean you're going to apply that knowledge towards doing something, illegal..right? lol

I think its a shame that people are getting on this guy about learning to pick locks.

I believe that when a person learns a new skill, regardless of what that skill is or how MOST people use it, you are making yourself a better, more well versed person. I took a few months and learned how to pick locks as well as remove handcuffs. Although I have never had an occasion to pick a lock yet, my handcuff expertise has come in handy on at least two occassions I can remember.

Go for it David J! Learn all you can before you die.

I feel the same way madd kapper. There is just so much to learn in your life time. I seek to understand new things and hear what other people have to say and see there views on life.

Life is short so learn all you can!

Try www.lysator.liu.se/mit-guide/mit-guide.html The MIT lockpicking guide is apparently the best guide around. I was learning about lockpicking too, had to postpone it as I've been busy. My advice would be to go for it, simple lock pick sets are cheap and it would be a great skill to have. I was going to learn for gits and shiggles. When I get round to it I'm going to amke an ant farm too but thats another story.

I very much agree with Kapper, however I don't know anyone that's gotten arrested for having an ant farm...might be a safer hobby (a bunch of people that grow illegal substances are on here lecturing this kid on how dangerus is lockpicking hobby is...um...HELLO?).

then you cannot be very good at it.
takes more time than that to become expert.

let's face it folks,
we're not stupid.
the vast majority of would-be lock-pickers
are would-be thieves.
so don't expect much support from others
in your new 'hobby'.

i will say this.
I agree with hippie, knowing how to pick a lock lets you know how to be a thief.
there are many reasons that you can give yourself for knowing how, but most of them are redundant.
i know how to pick locks and i wish i didn't, too much temptation.
you can have my set of picks if you want, they are just gathering dust in the basement.

Just because the vast majority of would be lock pickers are would be thieves doesn't mean that this specific one is, being a member of this board makes it fairly likely that he's one of the "weird" would be lock pickers, this place is filled with the "different" 5% of the world...

Plus, i know how to kick down doors, and use a sword to kill someone, but it doesn't make me a would-be assassin.

I think it's not so much the fact that lock picking is of questionable legality, i hope not at least, this would be a hilarious place to see people telling him not to pick locks because it might get him in trouble. It's more that the members of this board value their privacy, for personal reasons, and because a lot of them have a bunch of illegal(expensive) stuff behind their locked doors, and someone with a lockpick could bust in, grab a bunch of it, and leave, without the noise of breaking the door down.

That would leave us up shit creak, can't call the cops because of all the rest of the illegal shit (Yeah officer, someone broke in and stole half a pound of weed, some mushrooms, and my growlights...).

Plus we seem to have an extra special hatred for thieves, for one reason or another.

yeah,
several years ago
i was staying a a motel in hollywood cali.
i got home late one night
walked upstairs
put the key in the lock
and before you could say 'shit'
3 guys came up behind me,
pushed me thru the now open doorway
entered my room
and robbed me and 2 friends of mine who were there.
one had a pistol and struck me in the head with it a few times to get my attention
then made me go in the bathroom and stand in the tub [thought he was gonna shoot me where the blood would be easy to clean up]
then they left,
taking my car and one of my friends as a hostage.
they released him later and he was ok
but i never got any justice.
